  1. Have you picked up the Jorge Ben reissue that Dusty Groove put out? It's a Phillips reissue I believe and well worth the purchase.
  2. There's a whiff of Spring in the air today in Chicago. We should get above freezing, and in the sun snow is melting, forming little rivulets of water that point to warmer days ahead. It's probably just a tease though.
  3. Yep, local gigs in NYC only.
  4. It's interesting - hit or miss in my first couple listens depending on the track and personnel. I need to give it a more thorough sit down though and will report back when I do.
  5. RIP Teo There's a documentary coming out about Mr. Macero, and you can view the trailer for it here.
  6. It could be the influence of one of her teachers during her Chicago days, the one and only Erwin Helfer, a Chicago gem. As for the topic of the thread, I am still in the discovery phase of my jazz listening career, still following various threads of development, tracing sidemen interactions, and trying to piece the puzzle together. But as a part of that process I also find myself exploring the music of the whole world, because there comes a point in jazz, with musicians like Don Cherry where you have to listen to everything to understand what they were synthesizing - well, I'm not sure if that's necessarily true, but I find it to be instructive.
  7. I'm an unabashed Frisell fan - his music just works for me, something about it. Plus, the last time I saw him played this gorgeous version of Surfer Girl that was just stunning. I actually don't own this disc though, but will consider it for a future purchase.
  8. I like the part where you can get $10 back with an eBay MasterCard. Now that's savings!
  9. Here's one thing rock could certainly learn from jazz: how to age gracefully. Rock tends to reward youthful exuberance, but rock musicians don't age well generally or creatively. Many jazz musicians did some hot stuff while young but still managed to age like fine wine.
  10. Those are all great. As well: http://www.squidco.com
  11. I think instead of asking whether these two genres have anything to offer each other, the question should be whether our concept of genres has anything to offer us as listeners and appreciators of music.
  12. Really enjoying this - very groove based with some great melodies and guest artists mixing things up.
  13. I think that's a more than fair assessment bluenote82 - I know Vijay is an admirer of Threadgill's music and Liberty Ellman has played with him for some time now and the influence on Mr. Ellman's own music is palpable.
  14. Anyone in Iowa? Threadgill is playing in Ames in March, per Pi Recordings' calendar.
  15. Full Belly Deli? Don't know where else you can get a proper half sour pickle in Maine.
  16. Thanks for the info Bev! I appreciate it. That fRoots magazine looks great.
  17. I've been meaning to pick up that Andy Palacio. Anyone heard this? I've heard good things:
  18. That's really interesting Chuck. I never put the Dolphy -> Jarman connection together but now that you mention it I can definitely hear it.
  19. If by Democrats you mean disillusioned leftists who would consider voting for Barack Obama, then count me in. It's too bad I couldn't make it back to Maine to caucus. Sounded like a raucous caucus from those I spoke with.
  20. Thanks for the warm welcome folks!
  21. Greetings, Not sure if this is the correct section for an introduction post but.... Since I already broke board decorum by trying to sell worthless 78s in one of my first posts, I figure I should probably introduce myself. Thanks for all your help and understanding with that faux pas, by the way. Here's the facts: My name is Dan but my friends call me Danimal (hence the alias). I was born and raised in Maine amongst the moose and lobster. I've been in Chicago ever since, having done time at some University in Hyde Park that was equal parts education and mental torture. I came of age musically in Chicago and the AACM, and specifically the Velvet Lounge was responsible for broadening my musical horizons. I spend most of my disposable income on live music and recordings. Which is why I found this place, as you all seem to share my interests. I look forward to reading, learning, and contributing. Thanks for your hospitality!
  22. For those of you that are stateside, what is your preferred online outlet for buying international discs like the ones mentioned in this thread? Stern's obviously has a great selection, but the exchange rate these days with pounds to dollars is not favorable.
