okay so I, like all of you I read the Mosaic email about the upcoming releases and noted the Jazz Crusaders set... I'm not that familar with their stuff so I did a little research. I got the gist of their "conversion" in the 70's and 80's (and up to today)... And I do actually remember "Street Life" but... that's not what this Mosaic set is about (thankfully)... But here's my 2 questions... 1) Why do you think Mosaic DIDN'T include any of the Live at the Lighthouse Pacific Jazz releases? According to AMG there's at least another 6 LP's of live material (including Newport...) Should we lobby them to include that stuff?? 2) Anybody got a good website where I can get some samples of this material to listen to before I (very likely" pre-order ANOTHER set? thanks!!!

so both jazzmaztazz and cduniverse note that there are 4 cheap Verve sets about to be released.. these include... Jazz In Paris I: Champs Elysees 1917-1949 (3 Cd's) Jazz In Paris II: Montmartre 1924-1939 (6 Cds) Jazz In Paris Ill: Rive Gauche, Rive Droite 1956-1959 (8Cd's) Jazz In Paris IV: Saint-Germain-Des-Pres 1946-1956 (3CD's) and a street date of 4/12... They are generally in the $30 price range... Anybody got any more info???? Is this just a repackage of old stuff? Or is there any new stuff in there? Any body know who's playing on any of these??? thanks - I suspect it's kinda a waist of $$ knowing what Verve has been coming out with lately and given the price tag... but I'm curious....

What was it about the Select that didn't move you? I just found it incredibly uneven... Some very complex yet melodic pieces and then some "free-jazz" pieces that IMHO is just a lot of disconnected blowing....

they claim they've sent me the replacement set.... Their website says it shipped so hopefully I'll recieve it next week....

A while back I had a $100 Mosaic gift card and solicited your opinions about what should get with the cash... After mucho convincing I ended up with the Andrew Hill set (Not a good choice)... and the Gerald Wilson set.... (and thanks to Ron's eyes the European version of the Tal Farlow for another $50)... Just finished listening to the Wilson set and I would agree with most of you... there's some great music on this set... Some swinging arrangements and individual playing. Overally I give this a B+... Disc 3's cover of "Watermelon Man" is excellent.... The only blips on the radar screen were mainly in Disc 5 (the final disc). The pop tune covers some were okay, some were mediocre and there's a vocal track on Disc 5 that just did not work for me... I also didn't particularly like the organ pieces (but that's a minor complaint)... Overall a very swinging set... I would heartily recommend... so thanks..

As I've heard before on this board... Do I need this??? Got 3 of the Miles boxes.... Not familiar with this period... Is this the post Bitches-Brew period???? I didn't buy that set since I already have the original CD issue.... How does this compare to that??? Anybody got any more info??? thanks

REALLY???? How did you get them to send you replacement booklets? Did they charge you??? I've got a few CD sleeves that got water damage (It's a LONG story) but I won't ask them to do that.... unless.... Did they give you a hard time????

I'm just curious what services you guys use???? I started out using cheap-cds.com then moved to CDUniverse and still find that their 30% off advance new releases is a good policy... Although I do disagree with their policy to charge you for shipping each time... (It's a pain in the a**....) I'm now starting to use overstock.com. Not great on selection but good on price and little or no shipping costs.... I only use Amazon as a last resort for CD's.... What do you use? And why????

I'm just curious about something... Do any of you order 2 sets of a particular Mosaic you LOVE? For whatever reason... Here's my thinking... I'm kinda debating about having a 2nd set of the current Mosaics that I absolutely LOVE in case something happens to the 1st set... (e.g., fire, major scratch, sun, etc.) I'm only thinking about it in the case of the Elvin Jones set I have.... (and maybe the Jazztet set I just bought)... I would store them somewhere outside of my house... There are some sets that I still have (Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan in particular) that are OOP and should something happen to those I'd be WAY bummed out...

okay I know we talked about this in a thread a few weeks ago but I finally just finished listening to the set... WOW!!!! I only had one previous CD of Pepper and this set was fab!!! Just swinging from Track 1 through the last cut... I do disagree with people who constantly say he was the ONLY altoist who was able to develop a non-Charlie Parker sound.... I, for one, am a HUGE Jackie McLean fan who also developed his own unique sound.... (Try and find that box set... Fabulous!!! ) ... but returning to Pepper... Clearly he did have his own unique sound.... I agree with the previous thread about "interesting" (being kind) non-Cuscuna liner notes... Don't know what got into that guy????? Anyway... I just want to say this is a great set... Just out of curiousity... was any of this stuff OOP before the Select set???? thanks and fully recommended....

there was some confusion with several orders I recently placed but a call and a email seemed to immediately fix the problem... As someone who doesn't have quite 50 sets (but getting close to half that number).... I've always found their customer service/help excellent... Seems to be fine as always from my perspective....

Did you receive your replacement Farlow set from Caiman? they finally relented and agreed to ship it... they said they'll let me know when the replacement has shipped... they are SLOW!!!!!!!!!!! How you doing?

Now as I continue my Mosaic listening catch up period... I'm thoroughlly enjoying the Art Pepper Select... Just got a nice swing to it....

thanks man!!! I always appreciate this kind of info... I actually bought box sets about a month ago... Just finished listening to the Jazztet box... which was GREAT! I must have not listened to Benny Golson in a long time, 'cause I was very impressed with his playing on this set... Disc 6 which is his quartet session is very nice!!!! Alll the discs are very strong.. the only weak point I found was the first half of Disc 7.... Art Farmer always was a great ballad soloist and he does have some very nice solos on this... especially one cut of "My Funny Valentine." The Dinah Washington is next on my list... And I generally enjoy Kevin Whitehead's reviews... He actually let's you LISTEN while pausing for his review.... Thank (our maker - WHOEVER She is:) for Public Radio!!!! My only tiny gripe is that I wish they would use some jazz critics like Bob Blumenthal to do these reviews....

just finished Disc 1 of Farmer/Golson set... A welcome change from the Andrew Hill set... Farmer's got some beautiful solos.... B-) B-)

okay I'm about halfway through disc 3... and I have to admit I did glance at some of the earlier posts... At first listen.... very UNEVEN!!!!!!!!! some tracks exquisitely composed/melodic and some ALL OVER THE PLACE.... I try not to be too pre-disposed to so called "free jazz" but I find the moments of "free jazz" in this set - very poor.... I must say I'm a bit disappointed... Kinda makes me understand why they initially released "the best material".... Very, very uneven.... Now I have to back and read you people's arguments....
