  1. OH... My bad.. thanks for clearing that up....
  2. I agree with you about Verve packaging... the sad thing is MOST of the people who will buy these box sets are us.... jazz fans who care about the content. You would think they would cater their packaging to us.... And btw.. I shipped back the Farlow to camain.com today.. Will see how long it takes to get a replacement set... Even for $50 I want the best I can get...i
  3. Well, no , it doesn't mean that. It just means they probably got 1500 in at least, and that's the one they grabbed. Why do you think they send them out in numerical order? Okay here's what I'm thinking.. when you get a regular Mosaic box you get #3222 of 5000... I'm not saying that its' mailed out in the exact sequential order. I'm saying that of the 5000 they're printing, you've got #3222. The other 3221 have already gone out... (in whatever order they went out...) So there would be then 1778 left... So with the Andrew Hill set... my point is that they have already sold (based on preorders alone) at least 1372 or 27% of their production total... Which (to me) means this set is selling really well.... Am I making sense?
  4. you're absolutely right... Ron.... there is a significant drop in sound quality on the 3rd disc.... It's a bummer since the music is great.... I thought I heard the dreaded...... "hiss," at the beginning of cd 3.... this was one of the reasons (that and $$$) I begged off the JATP Live boxed set a few years ago... (poor recording quality...) but the music is really hot...
  5. okay like all of you who preordered the Hill set, I just got my copy today... I glanced at the boc and it was #1372 of 5000. That means 27% of their supply was preordered... Damn!!!!!!!!!! I looked at the Dexter Gordon set I ordered when that first came out, an my set was #493 of 5,000. Now I know that that there's a lot of Dexter out there but this Hill set must be hot!!!! Impressive.........
  6. hmmm... that's very good to know... I've just emailed them to ask about their return policy.... (and replacement...) Will keep you informed... thanks for quelling my queaziness about these guys.... (I think I deserve a point for have 2 Q's in one sentence... !!
  7. no I couldn't get the smudgeprint off..... It's on the label side of the CD so I'm assuming the actual music/track info is untouched.... otherwise it was exactly as you described... thanks
  8. B-) And I am a VERY happy camper... Managed to get this 5 cd box for $45 or so right before it came out... It's listed for $44.29 + $1.40 for shipping.... on overstock.com ... here's the URL if you're interested.. http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PA...PROD_ID=1032419 I'm just on Disc 1 and it's slamming...
  9. hey ron... got my tal farlow set yesterday... thanks again for the tip... It arrived almost exactly as you described.... (One major smudgeprint on one of the CDs though...) thanks...
  10. hmm.... this is making me nervous.... I assume all else (particularly the music/tracks/band) is the same....?
  11. Hey Ron... Do you remember where you got the "Exclusively for My Friends" box and for how much? I remember looking at it when it came out but it was running for $60 or so in stores.... Can you provide a little more info about those recordings? Band? You said it was live - Where and when? How would you rate it compared to the 1990 Telarc set??? thanks MAN, you ask a lot of questions. The 4 CD's in the box actually cover several sessions recorded from 1963 to 1968. They were recorded for a German record producer in his private studio in his villa, in front of a few invited guests. So, while they're live recordings, there is a very intimate feel to them (as if you had Oscar and friends come play for a few friends in your house). The first 3 discs are all trio performances with, depending on the session, Ray Brown or Sam Jones on bass and Ed Thigpen or Bobby Durham on drums. The fourth disc is just Oscar perfoming solo. I haven't done an A-B comparison of "Exclusively for My Friends" and "Live at the Blue Note," but in general I'd say that "Friends" is a bit more mellow than "Blue Note" and, as I said, it has a more intimate feel. The recording of "Friends" probably doesn't have the immediacy and presence that "Blue Note" has, as you'd expect given the different times in which they were recorded, but it sounds great. I got my copy of "Friends" from . . .[drum roll] . . . CAIMAN! They have it now for $43.43, as does jazzclassicaloperashop (from whom I've also made several purchases and who is EXCELLENT--IMMEDIATE first class shipping with tracking). BTW, speaking of Caiman, the Farlow set was delivered today. thank you sir.... that's VERY helpful... No more questions from me.... I will have to check out that set.... I'm glad you got the Farlow... I assume mine will come shortly...

  13. As I mentioned earlier... I had one of the CD's. I read through the boxed set's liner notes and the package itself and it doesn't mention anything about being remastered. I don't seek any new tracks.... If you've got all 4 it's probably not worth it... but if you don't - $25 for 4 live OP CD's is a great deal.... Hope that helps...
  14. okay clearly I need to go back and finish my glass and perhaps the bottle but I was just listening to Telarc's new boxed set of the Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note recordings. These were issued as individual discs in the 1990's. The set was recorded in 10/1990 with Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Bobby Durham. I had one of the individual discs and decided to buy the set since Telarc was selling it for less than $30.... Fabulous set.... Anybody get it??? I have to say the more I listen to O.P. the more I can help but enjoy his stuff... Here's the Telarc link for those interested... http://www.telarc.com/Jazz/title.asp?gsku=...K6RUAJXLX7PE6K0 camian.com at Amazon.com has it for $24.68 and cduniverse.com has it for $27.35... NOW.... I'm going to finish my wine... !!!!
  15. I was checking out several select sets and started wondering about this. Clearly this board has superior jazz minds on it (a few odd minds, but definitely knowledgeable about jazz.... and I wondered how many of you/how often you get a Mosaic set and post a review on their site???? I do think those reviews make a big difference and I do admire people who critically analyze the music. (Some of those posts are inappropriate and I have sent an email to Mosaic a few years ago about them monitoring the reviews...) I have about 11 sets (not couting Select sets) and I've probably posted about 4 reviews... Your thoughts????? Okay off to finish listening to Oscar Peterson and my glass of Cabernet....
  16. yea it said it went out on 2/7/05.... if i don't get by Wednesday or so... I'll give them an email... if you get yours soon, do let me know....
  17. Any word on your Tal Farlow set? no Ron.... For some strange reason even though I'm in a major city - the mail kinda gets slow.... Did you get yours???
  18. looks fine to me... I'm actually enjoying listening to the Woody Herman samples....
  19. I'm having the damndest time conceptualizing this... As you could guess I'm not that technically inclined.... Can someone translate this to someone like me who doesn't quite get it??? thanks
  20. I do keep mine in jewel cases vertically... but why is it preferred???? I never heard that before????
  21. Holy Mosiac, Batman!!!!!!!!!!! How many do you have!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you get those custom built and/or how come you didn't go taller instead of wider???
  22. yeah I agree with you... I prefer to keep them open and on display... After doing some web searching I'm leaning toward what you have.... Can't quite afford the custom made route.....
  23. okay I gather from our discussions about various box sets, that some of us here have very large either LP and/or CD collections... For those of you who have large collections - I'm talking over 1000 LPs and/or CD's, what do you do for storage???? I'm looking for a better way to store my stuff.... thanks
