Come on folks... I don't think I've heard a peep for this one... I grabbed this one as soon as it came out... and loved it. This is one of the Mosaics that the first time I listened I loved it... Haven't listened to the set in a few months again until now... Right now listening to Disc 2 and a beautiful version of My Ship... Does our silence lead one to Mr. Turrentine is even underrated by the mighty minds on this board????

okay I weakened... I coughed up the $$$ and ordered it today.... I listened to some Stitt from that period and said "what the heck..." We'll see... B-)

yeah this is the catch for me.... I love sax quartets... For example if this had been a Sonny Rollins set... Bam!!!!!!!!!! I also have the fear/feeling that this could be a set which I might have to WORK to like... E.g., getting past the quartet configuration (without even the variability that a live set would include).... and have to listen to it a number of times... Then again... Augh................

I can't tell (and I would be very appreciative if someone could answer the following questions).... 1) Is this previously unreleased material? 2) Is this various live performances (and they all were recorded in Paris - that's the theme)? 3) Or is this simply a compilation of cuts from other artists and previous releases...? A little help please...

I'm curious what you will think of the Johnny Smith. Please post a mini-review.. .... I will say that it's a fine set... There are some beautiful ballads on it. I also have a feeling that this is one of these sets that when you give it multiple spins it gets better... You know we're always kinda playing a little of a guessing game about, which if any CD's in a box set, will eventually be released as single CD's... but I feel VERY confident that 90% of the Johnny Smith will never see the light of day outside of Mosaic... FYI the number on my Johnny Smith box is 2497 (so they're about half gone...) I'm glad I got mine...

But it is an actual Mosaic set--one of the same limited edition of 10,000, obviously produced by Mosaic (Mosaic's name is all over the discs and booklet), but distributed by Universal as part of the licensing agreement that enabled the production of this set in the first place. There must be a story behind why the Universal copies of this set are being sold in the US at such discounted prices (maybe because the misprinted box spines?). If a Board Member with contacts could get the facts on this from someone at either Mosaic (Cuscuna?) or Universal, it would be interesting to know. I completely agree Ron... it is important to know... for a buncha reasons... for example... 1) Why the Tal Farlow and not other box sets? 2) Is Mosaic LOSING money by (us - me included ) buying the foreign version? (Although in my case I think they've made more than up for it... (See my purchase of the Chico Hamilton box and Hil Select...) 3) Should we expect more or less of this in the future?? I, for one, would like to know... (Even though I've already pre-ordered the Jazz Crusaders box and am waffling on the new Count Basie...) And on Ron... Camian did ship a replacement (completely sealed - which was kinda interesting)... and I'm LOVING the Farlow.... What do you think of it?

onto Disc 2 - Still Kickin!!!!!!!!!! If this keeps up ... the Farlow might crack my top 5 all-time Mosaics...

I know we had bits of this discussion in previous threads... but I just finished last week listening to the Johnny Smith set and just started with the Tal Farlow (European version thanks to Ron!!!! I am definitely enjoying the Farlow more (as many of you predicted)... His up-tempo numbers are outstanding... Swings very hard and imaginative... The best parts of the Johnny Smith IMHO were the ballads... but the Farlow (at least Disc 1, which is all I've gotten through so far)... is smokin....

okay so I bought the Art Pepper Select and was so impressed that I had to get more... I then bought the Hollywood All-Star Sessions... Very nice not as good as the Select IMHO but nice... So I'm debating (with the sale at True Blue) about the Art Pepper Village Vangard set... Can someone compare this with the above 2 boxes???? Anybody found any cheaper prices that trueblue's $120.. bestprices.com had it for $98 but it's not in stock... thanks

I really like the Selects too! I think it was a great move on Mosaic's part. I think I'm the only one who's not real fond of the Selects.... I've go about 5 or 6 of them (Hill, Gordon, Carmell Jones, Dizzy Reece, Pepper and the Curtis Amy)... The only one I LOVE is the Art Pepper... and the Jones, Reece and Gordon sets are good... The Hill and Amy sets I do not like.... Overall though.... I guess it's better for Mosaic to put them out as Selects than not at all.... but so far I found it a little disappointing...

Simply, because I love jazz music and in any one Mosaic set you get hours of great jazz! I enjoy losing myself for hours in the music and the notes of a Mosaic box set. I don't have time to do it as often as I would like, but when I do, it's wonderful. You love jazz, you gotta love Mosaic. I know it's simplistic, but that's it. I am currently listening to my recently purchased Elvin Jones Mosaic and I cannot speak highly enough about this set! I knew it would be fine, but it's GREAT! Exceeds my expectations, even though I had heard at least half of the music before. Excellent sound. AHA!!!! That's why I have 20 sets... thank you sir...
