Is it me, or is this release deeply confusing? Is it a digital-only analogy that's going to be released eventually on single CDs? Also, how does this overlap with the Mosaic Select? I've tried reading through the thread and I'm still confused.

Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
tranemonk replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
I'm in on this. Does anyone have any ETA on the cd version, that's not a "Tone-Poet" rip-off price? -
It's also up on Bandcamp, if no one already posted that. https://charlesmingusmusic.bandcamp.com/album/in-argentina-the-buenos-aires-concerts

Computer Gurus: New Browser?
tranemonk replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's not new but I constantly come back to and use Firefox. There's just so much customization and control for me. Brave is not new but I'd say that's my second choice. Even though I'm on a Mac I hate Safari. Opera is way too cluttered. -
Jazz legends extend to non-musicians like him... I have three jazz stations programmed into my phone, WRTI, WBGO and KCSM. All mean a ton to me. RIP Mr. Perkins.

Chick Corea's record collection auction
tranemonk replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yea I won't be bidding on any of this without a clear and substantive explanation about the backstory... Doesn't quite seem legit to me. -
She's fantastic. I will watch stuff she's in, just because of her. I even tried The White Lotus but only lasted like 10 minutes.

What does too Concord-y mean? What kind of record is that?

Interesting.. Did he identify himself as Black? Mixed-race children (especially of that era) often had the crappy choice of which side of their family to publicly identify with. There's a great movie in my Netflix queue called Passing, which kinda gets to that. I'm curious if he ever talked about it.

I was looking around on Bandcamp and found this group. I listened to their most recent record and was very impressed. I'm curious what you guys think. https://charlesowens.bandcamp.com/album/the-music-tells-us

Good to know. I just bought it but haven't had a chance to listen to it. I hope more of these get released.

Al Jarreau - Wow! Recorded Live In Performance At The Childe Harold
tranemonk replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
Both song selections and he sounded a bit repetitious at various points. It wasn't bad, just felt predictable. -
Something Else! Featuring Vincent Herring - Soul Jazz

Might have been me... but you are correct.. It's fantastic. Hope they do another one, preferably live. -

I found it kinda disappointing. -
Never heard of most of these but based on the sample tracks there's a couple that interest me. I'm not real fond of the over-the-top reviews but... what can you do? https://daily.bandcamp.com/best-of-2024/the-best-jazz-albums-of-2024

I purchased the download as there are three extra lengthy tracks in the download option. Having given the set a listen I completely forgot how beautifully Smith played. I went back to the Mosaic set and remembered why that was one of my favorite sets. I will definitely be purchasing the other Bandcamp title.

Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order
tranemonk replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I caved and got the cheaper set (Classic Vanguard set) for my Black Friday present to myself. A $60 difference from the Byas. I hope to get the Byas another time. Maybe folks can help me remember something. Didn't Mosaic occasionally offer a discount when a set was running low or was it on last chance? I don't remember them doing that recently but I thought they had done it before. -
I really don't understand why OP gets so much hate from some people... I don't get. I love his music.

Thanks. I suspected someone brought this up but I couldn't find it when I searched.

Is there a good list of Black jazz musicians who left the US for a long time and where they moved to? I've been intrigued by this since I learned about Don Byas. I think I know some of the more obvious, like Nina Simone and (I think) Dexter Gordon. I also listened to the radio and an Alvin Queen tune came up. I didn't know much about him (other than his new release on Cellar ) but the DJ said he moved to Switzerland (I think). I'm curious if anyone has generated a list. Thanks.

Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order
tranemonk replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Is it fair to say when listening to the Mosaic samples of the Byas, he does sound similar (at first listen) to Coleman Hawkins? I don't have any Byas and from what I read, there was a relationship between the two. But this will sound like a stupid question but how different do they actually sound (Byas and Hawkins)? -

Sounds like you're saying the Byas set is a better/more important/ buy than the Vanguard. Is that right? My sole hesitation is how I felt with the Chu Berry set. Rare, had to get it, only listened to it once.
