I think it's just a question of whether his distinctive organ like sound/tone works for you. It works for me, especially with the funky TJ Kirk stuff.

The thing that impressed me about the Heat in the first half was that even though the Spurs were excellent at quickly doubling on Lebron and Wade when they got the ball, both guys QUICKLY found an open man. Often the man they passed to had an open shot. Or that guy made a quick pass to keep the offense nicely spaced and the ball kept moving until someone got a good shot. Anyone who says that Lebron or Wade should have been more aggressive at getting their own shot doesn't get it. If it came to that later, Lebron and Wade can try to score with 2 men on them. But early in a game it's much more important to keep the ball moving, to get an offensive flow and to get other guys hot. But the way the Heat eventually dismantled an EXCELLENT Spurs defense was a thing of intelligent beauty. Also, despite the fact that Lebron was not hot shooting and the Heat had trouble scoring against the Spurs defense, the Heat didn't let up on defense for a moment. The Spurs got very few easy shots. I don't know if it's a question of when "they decide to win" as people often say. I think last night it was more a question of early work creating later opportunities, but in any event their ability to take over a game in just a couple of minutes is something to see. I just rewatched the 4th quarter. During the few minutes that they broke it open, Lebron made one key play after another, defensively, ballhandling, passing and scoring. Lebron does so many things that even when he's not shooting well his versatility is absurd. He blocked a shot by BIG Tim Duncan in the first half and a driving dunk by Bigger Tiago Splitter in the second. And he stole the ball from lightning quick Tony Parker when he was isolating for the last shot of the first half. His ball handling and passing got both Chalmers and Miller in great grooves. Who does all that? PS. What a pleasure having Van Gundy as the color man instead of Reggie Miller, the most annoying shill for star players ever. And that's a very contested category. His commentary makes my skin crawl.

I just noticed that not a single MLB team has won more than 7 out of the last 10 games. I think that's pretty interesting (although I may be too easily amused)

If taking away the organ sound makes him a fairly generic mainstream jazzer, how is it working against him?
-
I'm not sure why, but he just seemed so human, humble and approachable. And this has made his young demise even sadder to me.

If I recall correctly, Spanier died while still in Charlie's band, and he was then replaced by John Ellis. (I just googled "Charlie Hunter John Ellis" and found that a "John Ellis" in fact exists and that a guy by that name has played with Charlie Hunter at one time or another. That's confirmation enough for me to mark my statement "correct" )

what are you drinking right now?

Just switched from increasingly muddy pot of Melita Columbian Supreme coffee to Twinning's Earl Gray Tea. Last night was a margarita on the rocks and a diet coke (with peal and eat shrimp and a small order of buffalo wings at a beach bar - perfect meal!) followed by 2 Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPAs when I got home. Life is good. -
Mike Schwartz/ KSJS guest list

Mike: Maybe this is a silly or unfair question, but do any of the many fine musicians you've interviewed stand out as being especially personable, friendly or interesting? -
My history with Charlie is much the same. It's not that I started liking him less, it's more that he put out so much product that I didn't keep up, and once I got out of the habit of buying everything I stopped buying anything. Should probably remedy that.

I think all of his stuff is pretty strong. I once saw him in a group in which he didn't get an organ type sound from his guitar and they sounded almost like a straight on 60's heavy rock jam band and it was much less distinctive and more generic. I don't know if this corresponds to a particular cd so I know i'm not being real helpful. By contrast, a CD of his that worked surprisingly well was Natty Dread in which he covered an entire Bob Marley/Wailers album in his own distinctive style. I saw that band too and their take on No Woman No Cry actually brought tears to my eyes! He phrased the guitar in a way where it actually reminded me of singing. Very lyrical. (pun recognized but not originally intended!)

You were great in CHiPs! LOL . Never been told that I resembled Eric "Ponch" Estrada before, but at my current age I'd take Chuck Estrada. (And you thought YOUR cultural reference was dated!)

I don't know how many people are into Charlie Hunter's music, which is often quite funky in a soul jazz type of way, featuring Charlie's unique sound on his hybrid 8 string guitar/bass, which sounds more like an organ when he plays it through a Leslie (I assume) In any event, this 1996 CD by TJ Kirk, a cooperative effort rather than a "Charlie Hunter project" holds up really well, and I would recommend it to anyone who digs organ trios and funk. Here's a portion of the AMG review> The idea of three guitarists and a drummer who play the music of Thelonious Monk, James Brown andRahsaan Roland Kirk may seem odd or limiting, but the musicianship of the players in question has produced an album that explicitly explores the connections between the compositions of these three legendary musicians while raising the stakes in the debate about what is and isn't "jazz." Scott Amendola's drumming is precisely funky throughout, and Charlie Hunter's 8-string guitar supplies both the punchy basslines and the heavily chorused chords that Will Bernard and Will Schott build upon, resulting in a tightly rendered "The Payback," a stirring version of the eternal "Ruby, My Dear" and the multiple tempos and timbres of "Brake's Sake."

I totally agree with you. I must say though, that it took me a while to be able to avoid responding to negative comments so I sort of understand newer posters getting hooked on the pissing contest part of forums. I think for some people, like myself, it took a while to realize that pissing contests only diminish the potential of the place. And some people never stop loving that shit. -

I'm committed to avoid being part of any controversy to help avoid all of us former JC posters being viewed similarly as argumentative. I was even able to resist arguing with Jim R for calling me a "voice of reason," but I do have my limits. -

Let's not generalize about an entire board and a whole bunch of people because of an exchange or two that bothered you. You can find the exact same kind of crap here among people who never posted on board Y. You're really sounding no different than the stuff you're complaining about.
