I have been on a big Bechet kick lately and I picked up his "autobiography" from the library yesterday. It's an interesting read for sure but the funny part is, I was this first person to check it out since 1964! I am actually surprised that they still had a copy on the shelf for that long, especially since no one seems to be reading it. Anyone here read it? The first 50 pages have been pretty slow, please tell me it gets better!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Brute replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Today it's The Complete Hall, Johnson, DeParis, and Dickenson Blue Note Sessions, Disc 1 "Steamin' and Beamin'" by the Edmond Hall Swingtet. I LOVE this set! -
And returned! Much obliged!

First Mosaic Select Is Running Low!
Brute replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
FYI, I was at Jazz Record Mart in Chicago a few weeks ago and they still had at least one copy of this set available. -
Track listings for each disc, musicians and date of each session, etc. (Discography?). I have an opportunity to buy this set used locally but it doesn't come with a book or box. I already own some of this music on other collections and I am wonderring if it's worth purchasing (ie, how much overlap). Thanks.

Hi, folks. Can anyone help me out locating the discography for The Complete Bechet Blue Note set? I tried the "Way Back Machine" Internet Archive but apparently this set was OOP by the time Mosaic had launched it's website. I haven't had any luck elsewhere. Thanks!

I couldn't imagine living without my 80gb. I love using the "Album Artist" section to list all sidemen on an album. This allows me to make playlists for a specific artist even if they're not the leader. I also usually copy and paste the "Album Artist" info into the "Lyrics" section so I can access it on the fly. AMAZING.

Chu Berry Mosaic Has Entered the Building
Brute replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It's been 5 months since I posted this and I admit that I was wrong about this set. The more I listen to it, the more I am enjoying it. I really like the variety of settings that Chu is featured in. However, from a remastering standpoint, the Hampton box still sounds better to my ears! -

I think one of the things I love most about the Hodges box is the lack of alternate takes. You really get your money's worth with that set. -
Verve Johnny Hodges and Prima/Manone now in "Running Low"
Brute replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If you dig "Play The Blues" & "Back To Back" (who doesn't?), you will LOVE this set. It is without question one of my top five Mosaics. FYI, The "Blues-A-Plenty" session from the twofer you speak of is included in the Mosaic. -
I'd guess that I own about 500 Jazz CDs and I have ZERO Garner (not counting a handful of songs on compilations). I am typically enthusiastic about exploring unfamiliar artists and would love to hear more of Errol's work. It's a damn shame that his "Estate" is crippling his legacy and blocking newer jazz fans from discovering his catalog.

You can still pick up used copies of "The Blue Note Swingtets" CD from amazon marketplace sellers. I believe it is OOP but it contains some of the Quebec stuff and is a decent sampler. Check it out HERE

This is an old thread but I have never spotted it before. I also really liked this series, good stuff. There are quite a few that I'd still like to pick up but damn they're usually expensive on the used market unless you get lucky. I've got these... Billy Bauer - PLECTRIST INTRODUCING JIMMY CLEVELAND AND HIS ALL STARS Illinois Jacquet - THE KID AND THE BRUTE (w/ Ben Webster) Meade Lux Lewis - CAT HOUSE PIANO Paul Quinichette - THE VICE PRES Harry Edison - THE SWINGER/MR. SWING (2 CD set)(Jimmy Forrest is basically co-leader) EDIT: Just wanted to add that I usually skip the organ tracks on the PQ album but consider the rest of it to be great.

YES! Thanks, King Ubu. Sorry, I haven't had a chance to post until now but I really appreciate this!

I'm just interested in knowing what has been released on CD and what hasn't. I'd like to obtain as much of this music as I can afford to. There something about these sessions that really jive with me. Harry Lim was doing something right and it's a shame that his label didn't last.
-
Thanks for that, Jazztrain. I just assumed they were all from the same sessions but I guess not.

Hi Ubu! Thanks! "Rainbow Mist", I'll put that on my list. It is a shame that the complete Keynote sides have not been reissued on CD in their entirety. I think that Mosaic would do a fine job with those. Does anyone know if there is an online discography available for the Complete Keynote LP set? I have not been able to find any info.

Can anyone direct me to the discography for these sessions? Is there a "complete" Hawkins discography online somewhere? The Japanese import CD has extra tracks that were not included on the album and thus no info on them. Thanks in advance!

Bumping my own thread (hope that's not taboo around here). So I now have hunted down the Coleman Hawkins 4 disc set (got this one as an early X-Mas gift from my wonderful wife), The Roy Eldridge & Swing trumpets 2 disc set (smokes!), the Tristano disc, The Keynoters, The Lester Young disc (fantastic!), The Ellingtonians (nice mix), and The Benny Carter disc (awesome!). Can anybody tell me if the Red Rodney, Red Norvo, and "Small Herd" discs are worth the cash they are currently going for on the used market (holy shit these are expensive)? Additionally, I have been on a Hawkins kick and I picked up a used copy of "Hollywood Stampede" and found a Japanese import of "Thanks For The Memory" on Xanadu (1944 sessions). Both of these are also great and very much in the vein of the Keynote stuff. Care to reccommend any similar small group swing? I have some Mosaics that I really prize that are similar (Hampton Victors, H.R.S., Blue Note Ike Quebec & John Hardee, and Classic Capitol sessions) and I also just won the "Genius of the Jazz Guitar" Christian box set for an amazing $21.50 on ebay (score!).

Chu Berry Mosaic Has Entered the Building
Brute replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Here's my take... My wife gave me this set for Christmas and while I haven't heard all of it yet, I'm a bit disappointed. I was only familiar with Berry's Commodre sides and I was hoping that this set would be similar. It's not, really. The quality of the audio is a bit of a let down, too. Especially after hearing the recent Hampton box. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy it but I would reccomend that Hampton set if you don't have it. -
As mentioned earlier in the thread, the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine is a great resource for retrieving old Mosaic discographies (and a lot of other web pages of yore...). Here is the one for Mosaic #170: Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions discography Many thanks! Missed that link up front. Very handy.
