  1. Between Me and You on Muse and the Hampton Hawes LP on Freedom A Little Copenhagen Night Music. Still have a soft spot for Expansions. First introduction was thru Doug Carn's Infant Eyes (also with Henry Franklin!) I remember when the radio DJ would say that it was Michael Carvin on the drums, I'd wonder "Michael who? ...and why is he doing that to his drums!" --- Now playing: Nina Kotova - Cello Concerto: 3. Allegro Con Spirito

    Anthony Braxton

I think Braxton and Leo Feigin would find the criticisms of "intonation problems" quite humourous. ...or maybe not...(re: a recent Wire letter) Brilliant recordings - both of them. ...and for a guy who is pretty sick of the guitar, I really like Kevin O'Neil's style. --- Now playing: Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
  3. The oily way to have a good B-Day is with this! + 5
  4. NOT "Amazing Grace" --- Now playing: Johnny Richards - Annotations Of The Muses (Part Two)
  5. I could go thru the rest of my life without ever hearing "Amazing Grace" again. I hope that I do as a matter of fact... --- Now playing: Freddie Slack - I Lost My Sugar In Salt Lake City
  6. Yup, I understand completely. I'm not saying that it's essential either, but a real enjoyable listen if you're into arranging. I mean, it's NOT Gil Evans! It's kinda the same reason why I've been enjoying these 6 discs of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. soundtracks. The arrangements (and the bongos!) I agree, and if a coupla you guys have the vinyls, then having the CDs are pretty much just a convenience... --- Now playing: Johnny Richards - Plata De Azul
  7. I hate to tell you this but some of the solos on the Richards are incredible. The cut Cimarron from the LP Wide Range is a great chart. from the liner notes: "...It opens at a gallop, spurred by Gene Quill, alto; and Hank Jones, piano. Then the trombones take over. Jimmy Cleveland opening with a 48-bar chorus, passing it on to Jim Dahl for the same length, then to Frank Rehak for his 48. The order of the impressive fours, following a brief orchestral interlude, is Rehak, Dahl, and Cleveland. Willie Rodriguez and Maurice Marks each bites off eight bars of percussion, then the trombone section whips through two sets of eight-bar solos, with Rodriguez leading Dahl and Cleveland..." Sounds like a bone race with tight arranging. Some of the "lighter" cuts are still good if you're into colorful arrangements too.
  8. On last week's web broadcast, I had some unexpected - for them - positive responses to that set (I had played the whole thing as well as the Johnny Richards Select). Especially surprised and ethusiastic was a fellow from a place just outside of Oslo. I pointed him to the Mosaic website for ordering. Rod --- Now playing: Oval - Cross Selling
  9. Then, there's the Fiona Apple CD called....(hold yer breath): When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Fight And He'll Win The Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest Of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right. whew... --- Now playing: Süleyman Erguner/Ihsan Özgen/Koray Safkan - Ney Taksimi/Beyâtî Pesrev/Acem Durak/Kemence Taksimi/Sevkefzâ Saz Semâisi/Sevkutarab Ilâhî/Salât/Duâ
  10. A few of Eddie Harris' gems: Is it In? The Reason Why I'm Talking Shit (his "comedy" album) Eddie Who? This is Why You're Overweight Vexatious Progressions How Can You Live Like That Playing With Myself Here Comes the Judge Plug Me In --- Now playing: Süleyman Erguner/Ihsan Özgen/Koray Safkan - Ney Taksimi/Beyâtî Pesrev/Acem Durak/Kemence Taksimi/Sevkefzâ Saz Semâisi/Sevkutarab Ilâhî/Salât/Duâ
  11. Do you know how they compare to the "Proper" boxes? --- Now playing: Vandermark 5 - Vent (For Glenn Spearman)
  12. It happens rarely to me, but when I fall in love with someone's work, I often try to contact them about it (living artists, of course). Shirin Neshat's work is amazing - both in film and her 2-D art - and I've tried to buy everything I can to learn about her and her work. After being so taken by this woman's extraordinary artistic output, it was an extra special delight to actually receive hugs and a kiss from her on my birthday in 2003. Her work is very special and very much of these times! --- Now playing: Malang Nejrowi - Samples Of Drum Rhythms On Zirbaghali
  13. Oh. I thought this thread was about contraception... never mind... --- Now playing: Schlammpeitziger - Prä-Digitaler Volksstuhlhänger
  14. Wow! Daddy-O-Daley. Haven't heard that name in ages! --- Now playing: To Rococo Rot - Miss You
  15. Do you have Orchette's ornestral album "Skies of America"? --- Now playing: Eugene McDaniels - The Lord Is Back
  16. This is one of the reasons that I was surprised about how early he was into this. In 72, I went with my friend Corky to see RTF open for Bachmann-Turner Overdrive (!?!) outside of Chicago. It seemed that we were the only ones there who just stayed for RTF. Anyway, afterwards, we got to go backstage and meet and talk with Corea. Very nice guy! We were just hanging around while his crew was loading gear and we ended up helping out, then Corea, himself, asked if we lived very far away and whether we needed a lift (not from him, I'm sure). We said we were getting picked up - said goodbye - and off we went. For a couple of young kids, it was exhilarating! --- Now playing: Ike Quebec - Don't Take Your Love From Me
  17. Thanks Mike for straightening me out on that. He was involved much sooner than I'd thought! --- Now playing: Duke Pearson - Sleigh Ride
  18. Yeah, he and Black Moses ought to get together
  19. I was under the impression that Corea discovered it thru that woman Gayle Moran who used to "sing" on his pixie-ass records. Didn't he eventually marry her? --- Now playing: As One - The Daisy Picker
  20. You could try this: Sound 01 It's older, but it has Mike Ladd and 2 Roots Manuva tracks (and clouddead too).
  21. Chucky's right. It's less the sugar than the phosphoric acid that attacks the tooth enamel.
  22. No, Dan. I think that's pretty accurate. Excessive caffeine can keep you sitting on the porcelain throne.
