Those Japanese sides are called Meditation and come in two volumes as you said, but good luck in finding them under $25 each. Tho not strictly a Pharoah CD, this one is nice:

I like Spirits too. Meta is another one of those labels that has some surprising goodies. As an aside: About 1981 or 82, I got a copy of a Mandingo Griot Society LP on Flying Fish that Adam Rudolph was part of and wondered if he'd continue his fine playing in a solo situation. Over the years I've been pleasantly surprised by his output.

Didn't know that! What a vibe tho! As you know, I likes that Alkebu-Lan - warts and all (mostly vocal). Mtume's dad did a version of that song on The Gap Sealer didn't he?

He had great lineups on those Theresa's, but they were a lot less intense. It doesn't mean that the fire was gone, but, rather, it was more of a spiritual flame. BTW, I think that Prayer Before Dawn was a good place to stop there too (doing Whitney Houston and Xmas music...)

Just on a limited edition Japanese disc (with great sound I might add...) Long gone I think...

Re: Live at the East: I'll say too that it's quite a revelation to hear Stanley Clarke on upright (with Cecil McBee) - hell, the basswork on that whole thing sends shivers of joy! I agree...Izipho Zam is great! Maybe we can begin going on to the Theresa's next...

I think it's disliked by many because nearly every song has vocals. If I remember right, the Golden Lamp may be the only one without, but it's been many years since I've heard it.

Ah, OK...you mean in a sound way - and not actual extension...Ok, I could probably hear that.

Oh, man - I cannot relate to the concept of Live at the East being boring! Healing Song, to me, is incredibly exciting - in a down home hand-clapping way! But, I think many of us probably revolve very close to Clem's ratings anyway.

I think you mean that it's Prince of Peace redone (from Izipho Zam) dontcha?

I love Pharoah - always have. As a child, I waited in extreme anticipation for the next Pharoah album. I will say tho that Love In Us All was probably a good place to stop
  16. Don't forget Buffalo Springfield.
  17. OH! Suri not!
  18. I wanted to mention that if you have iTunes, you can listen to "Putumayo Radio" by going to Radio/International/Putumayo Radio.

  20. So if I was digging Nessa LPs during my pre and teen years (and I was), then I should be reconsidering my choices from those days?
  21. Complete Ligeti piano too (on BIS).
  22. I'm in a Springfield VA hotel room confused as shit. I'm gonna have to think about this some...
  23. Like the set very much. Standard thickness of LPs, but good sound quality. Have thought about selling the set tho, but not because of the music of course - just the redundancy of having the CD set. It was a little unsettling, at first, to have some of the LP overlap, but got used to it. Yes, I'm curious too what this set would fetch.
  24. Sure Ubu - I just wanted to say that I'm not holding anything against you I'm just grateful to be able to hear from someone who has great taste in music who makes a discovery thru his own ears - unbiased by the commodity hounds. I'm with Robert on these too - I've been surprised by some of what's included on these comps. Also, if you are interested in making the jump to find out more about music from other cultures, there's a fun, informative magazine that I get called Songlines that comes with a CD. Rod
  25. ...but I like the idea of hearing someone (ubu) talk about his interest in this label on a purely musical level. I'm agreeing with Clem on this too (I'd add a few others to that list too: Trikont for bizarre explorations, fer instance), but Ubu doesn't have the Starbucks uber-hip lifestyle culture music in his face the way it is here and this is good to hear his side of what he truly enjoys. rod
