  1. Any residue of Griff's spirit that was left in that horn is long gone now.
  2. Words fail me. Did he not call Johnny Griffin the Keith Richards of the saxophone?! This would be hilarious if it was real satire but I'm afraid it's not.
  3. I was a late comer to "Our Thing" precisely because it was so hard to get that I got to know all the others so intimately and fell in love so deeply with "Inner Urge" and "In N Out" that even now, as great as "Our Thing" is, I prefer to stick with my first loves. I also still prefer "Free For All" to "Indestructible" (it ain't even close) and I think I'm right so no arguments. "Unity" was definitely a holy grail record -- I remember getting my first cassette tape copy c. 1985 and listening to it constantly for weeks on my Walkman (remember those?). I adore "Gettin' Around" -- in fact, just yesterday did the Twitter/Facebook, posting "Shiny Stockings" and saying of Dexter: "Now there's a cat who knows how to relax. Hutch, Barry, Bob and especially Billy in no hurry either. Coda: Michael Kocour and I once saw Dexter play 'Moment's Notice' in Chicago and Dexter was so far behind the beat that I swear the rhythm section lapped him at one point." But back to "Gettin' Around" -- yeah, "Heartaches"! That saucy vamp, The sly way Dexter sneaks in with that breathy attack on the melody and the hip way he phrases the tune with that incredible sound, and the way Hutch circles the tenor on the melody (that first vibes fill is so flirty and perfect). That whole record has such an incredibly relaxed feel, but I get why it's not as revered as the others. I mean, in a fire, I'm grabbing Our Man in Paris/Go/Swingin Affair but there's no other record that sounds like "Gettin' Around" and, well, that's what it's all about. . Dexter's solo on "Very Saxily Yours" is a masterpiece. A perfect solo.
  4. I'm playing with a very good group tonight. No slouches here. Bruce Harris Sextet with Jerry Weldon, Frank Basile, Michael Weiss, David Wong, Joe Farnsworth. 10:30p - 1:00a
  5. dawg you must actually have a copy of that by this point i bet... No I don't have it. But I do have a few short minutes on homemade super-8 film (with no sound). Need to get that transferred...
  6. 9. "Kids Are Pretty People" (Thad Jones) Billy Mitchell Quintet A Little Juicy (Smash) w/ Thad, Richard Wyands, Kenny Burrell, Herman Wright, Oliver Jackson The arrangement comes from (or precedes) the big band arrangement.
  7. John Coltrane: Live at the Half Note Song of Praise 19:39 My Favorite Things 22:47
  8. Terry Pollard!
  9. This has all changed. The third symbol from the left is now u for underline. There is nothing called "Special BBC Code." The <> button (whatever that is) has no "Media" option. The "Insert other media" button doesn't either. Please advise.
  10. It all depends on the venue. The Vanguard bartender sells your CDs for you at the bar for no fee, but customarily you tip for the service $1-2 per CD. The Kennedy Center sells your CD for a 30% commission! Many venues charge a commission even if you are selling your CDs yourself off the bandstand, but some don't.
  11. That's always been my "go to" recording (along with Bud's solo piano on Verve) for students to learn how to play solo at any tempo without a stride left hand.
  12. Believe me, there is nothing more surreal than sitting at THAT piano, with headphones on and hearing yourself as if you are actually INSIDE a groove of a BN 4000 series LP.
  13. When I recorded at Rudy's he was all business. Fortunately he didn't make any editorial comments about the music itself, unlike other engineers I've had - that's the last thing you need. I will say that Rudy's volume of play-backs was ear-splitting loud, I don't know why.
  14. 00:21 I love how Griff says, "What is this, a hum-along?" and Wes replies, "Well if you can hum and play at the same time, that's beautiful. Nice!"
  15. Just remembered something funny about that Vanguard week. One night Von started to play a tune I didn't know, I can't remember now what it was. Before he got too far into it I tried to wave him off. He just smiled and said, "In that case, feel free to express yourself!"
  16. It seems incredibly petty to me that Blue Note would put "Etc." in place of McCoy's name on the covers of Page One, In 'n Out and Night Dreamer just because (I'm assuming) McCoy was recording as a leader for Impulse at the time.
  17. 6/19/15 Jazz saxophonist Buddy (4 letters) and "_________ Serenades" (1952 jazz album) 8 letters. What the hell is this?!?
  18. http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/ConlonNancarrow
  19. I wish it was Alice Tully Hall. It was Merkin Hall in 1992, but thanks for reminiscing Marty. The concert was entitled "Monk, Bud and Bird: Rediscovered Rarities"
