Following is my post at AAJ in response to this bullshit rumor: Originally Posted by the magnificent goldberg "Johnny Griffin is 78 today. He is not in Paris. He is home. He returned today from a concert in Antwerp. Originally Posted by the magnificent goldberg "Fortunately, although he retired from playing some time back" Another untruth. Griff is not retired. He performs around once a month.

Ugh... I've found illustrated instructions online which more or less match the above posts. Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing left to do but get my hands in there...

Mine are Snells from 1988. I bought a foam surround replacement kit online for $19 figuring that's all I have to lose if I screw it up since the original surrounds are disintegrated anyway. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to buy new drivers from Snell.

This is probably what you're referring to: From David H. Rosenthal 'Hard Bop' Oxford University Press 1992. Quote from McLean: "The first record I made was not with Miles. I made a rhythm-and-blues piece with Charlie Singleton's band called 'Camel Walkin' where I played baritone sax, no solo." If Bird had been taking part in the session, I am sure McLean would have mentioned this! Jackie gleefully played me this track at his house a few years ago. Never mentioned anything about Bird playing on it.

That's where the pics I posted came from.

Happy birthday Michael Weiss

What an international group of well-wishers! Israel, Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Holland, Texas and Indiana (the last two really should secede, c'est bon? I've lived in both places long enough to be able to say that without catching too much flak). Thanks a lot. -
Without giving an opinion about what he was doing there with Christina A, and which one is playing up or down to who, from purely a musician's point of view, you gotta admit, if you could hear him, through Christina's wailing, Herbie WAS playing his ass off. I know it's hard, but you have to be willing to tune out all the bullshit, listen close and zero in on what Herbie was actually playing.

Texas tenor players KICK ASS

Jerry Haynes = Mr. Peppermint, beloved Dallas area TV kiddie show host Don't forget Mr. Greenjeans. And while on the topic of Dallas kiddy-TV nostalgia, how about Icky Twerp? Had nice times working with Marchel and Fathead over the years.... -

That would be nice.... -
Sometime around 1980 Sadik Hakim played me an open-reel tape of Dennard playing solo at a house party. I don't remember the date, but presumably by the sound perhaps from the early fifties. I first met Idrees Sulieman at Sadik's apartment around the same time and believe the tape came from him. Jamil Nasser also has it and played it on WKCR some years ago. The tape has two tunes - Boplicity and Round Midnight. I remember Boplicity as played very smoothly in block chords perhaps in emulation of the Birth of the Cool band. He had a beautiful sound. I'm dying to hear this tape again. Jamil had some kind of conspiracy theory about Dennard's death that I never understood. Something about their tour in Tangiers and the CIA?? I asked Joe Wilder a few days ago about Oscar Dennard and the name didn't ring a bell.

Joe Wilder debuts at Village Vanguard
Michael Weiss replied to Michael Weiss's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Not only first gig at the Vanguard, possibly first gig leading a quartet in NYC, certainly for a multi-night engagement. And yes, his tone is still gorgeous. His creativitiy and adventurousness as an improviser has been completely overlooked. Plus, Joe has perfect pitch. I thought I'd stump him by starting "Just Friends" in the key of A, and he jumped right in without hesitation. I was shocked. -

We'll be doing some tunes from Soul Journey, but the arrangements have been suped up. More sections, different rhythms, more soprano sax... Also I have some newer music that's even more composition heavy - 70%, 30% solos. Still under Wayne's spell. Was in Detroit last October. No plans yet to return but will keep you posted. My Website is usually kept up to date. -
1. CLIFFORD JORDAN: Inward Fire (Muse) "Inward Fire" Dizzy Reese Pat Patrick Howard Johnson Muhal Richard Abrams Richard Davis Louis Hayes 7. CHARLES McPHERSON: McPherson's Mood (Prestige) "Explorations" Barry Harris Buster Williams Roy Brooks 10. FRANK STROZIER: Remember Me (SteepleChase) "Get Out of Town" Danny Moore Howard Johnson Harold Mabern Lisle Atkinson Michael Carvin Stefan you must be a sad guy - nine out of thirteen tunes in minor keys. Baritone player is definitely not Pepper Adams. If Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck played like that they probably wouldn't have gotten so popular.

1. HORACE SILVER: Jazz Has a Sense of Humor (Verve) "Not Enough Mama Part 1" Ryan Kisor Jimmy Greene John Webber Willie Jones III These are all my pals and they get right in Silverville as well as anyone around today. This is as good a band as Horace could have. Too bad they hardly got to work. 3. EDDY LOUISS: "Bohemia After Dark" Jimmy Gourley Guy Pederson Kenny Clarke 5. Joe Henderson with ?? 7. "Three Little Words" Certainly not Newk, but a little of his influence is there. The tone reminded me a little of 1960s Joe Farrell but Joe Farrell plays a lot better than this guy, who probably wishes he could do another take. 9. EASTERN REBELLION (Timeless) "5/4 thing" George Coleman Cedar Walton Sam Jones Billy Higgins Classic record. Some of the best George Coleman on record. 10. Not much use out of all those horns, but nice sound and voicings nonetheless. No idea who this is. 11. BIG JOHN PATTON: Soul Connection (Nilva) "The Coaster" Grachan Moncur Grant Reed Melvin Sparks Alvin Queen Sorry to say it, but this version made me run to the stacks to pull out "Evolution." The other tracks I couldn't identify and maybe that's a good thing!
