  1. Was that in the fall of 1986 perhaps?
  2. I was in that band in 1982 with Murray Wall and Marvin Smitty Smith. Bob Gurland would frequently get lost in a blues. Maybe you heard us in Toledo?
  3. Roy Haynes at the Vanguard last night. Playing like a young man...amazing
  4. I just talked to Hank on the phone this morning about an hour before being released from the hospital and he sounded great - as sharp as ever.
  5. Elvis Costello was in the Vanguard a couple of Mondays ago with his father. On another Monday night some 10 years ago or so: James Coburn with a fine babe on his arm. I saw Phyllis Diller hanging out at Bradley's a few times.
  6. May 1 NTSU Following afternoon piano masterclass, I'll be performing most likely with a trio at the Student Union, 9:00p - 11:30p.
  7. George Colligan Quartet tonight at the Jazz Standard. One of the best pianists in NY today, with Steve Wilson, Vincente Archer, EJ Strickland.
  8. Hope to see New York area Organissimo chapter members out in force... I'll have the same band: Steve Wilson - alto, soprano Ugonna Okegwo - bass George Fludas - drums Daniel Sadownick - percussion going in the studio after our week.
  9. Got tickets to hear Christian Tetzlaff play the Violin Concerto with the NY Phil March 14.
  10. Did you ever get to your destination with that one spinning? We had no destination - just driving around the hilly countryside outside of Bloomington, Indiana in the middle of the night.
  11. February 20 Michael Brecker's memorial concert at Town Hall. Herbie/Patitucci/DeJohnette was a highlight as well as Leibman and Randy's words. February 24 Piotr Anderszewski at Carnegie Hall playing Szymanowski's Metopes (highly recommended!!) and Beethoven's Bagatelles and Diabelli variations. Brian Blade at the Vanguard. Jon Cowherd had a great solo on a medium fast tune in 7/4, after which the set all but died with a long drawn-out Beatles medley. I don't get it....
  12. In the late 70s I remember driving around in a friend's car listening to Trane Live in Seattle on 8-Track!
  13. I just ran into Leroy at my neighborhood bank just a few months ago. Very nice guy....What a drag.
  14. Thanks everybody for the well wishes. Just returned from a very enjoyable set by Grant Stewart at Smalls. Heading to Bermuda next week with the Vanguard bigband for a few days, then gearing up for a return to the Vanguard, March 27-April 1. Let's see. Which smilie? The "grateful" one of course:
  15. With just a little notice I could have comped you.... Hmm.... Jim McNeely will probably be playing that concert. If anything changes I'll let you know.
  16. With just a little notice I could have comped you....
  17. Thanks to Steve Schwartz for featuring me on his show, Jazz From Studio Four on Friday, February 9 from 9:00p - 11:00p EST. Listen live: WGBH Online
  18. This is one of my favorite records. They've got a serious vibe on this date. Even the sad piano and studio and something to it. And always a pleasure to hear John Gilmore outside of Sun Ra's band (not that I don't enjoy hearing him in the Arkestra).
  19. Was in a cab tonight with a Russian driver who was very familiar with Roslavets, Obouhov, Alexandrov and Feinberg. I'm working on an arrangement of a Roslavets prelude, Largo from 1915, for my quintet. Maybe we'll play it at the Vanguard in March. The three "Compositions" from 1914 are really nice. I have the music to the second sonata, but it's a bitch to play and not all that satisfying for me. I love music that stretches tonality like a rubber band, but strictly serial pieces like that are a little tough for me to appreciate. I have Hamelin's recording of Roslavets. I like Schoenberg's Op. 11 but the later piano music is not for me - at least now. Never say never. Have to admit I'm unfamiliar with the Busoni sonatinas.
  20. I thought he was a drummer.
  21. Samuil Feinberg Sonatas #5 (Op. 10) and #7 (Op. 21). These pieces are a nightmare to read but well worth the effort. Check 'em out: Tracks 1.2.3. Track 7.
  22. I think that's some of the dumbest ignorant shit I ever seen posted here.
