  2. Heading to Santa Fe, Chimayo, Taos, Jemez Springs in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to the sights, sounds, mountain air and NM cuisine.
  3. Innocently picked a collection of Jayne Cortez poems off the used bookstore shelf today. Opened the book, and right there on the page in front of me, I found myself described in the poem JOHNNY BLOWING AND POINTING HIS MACHETE: Johnny checking his watch and clapping in time with piano player's bouncing shoulders Johnny dancing with his saxophone together they are foreshadowing paraphrasing and shadow boxing (continues) There are references to the Blue Note and a tune of Griff's we used to play, "You've Never Been There." She must have been in the club one night. Now to continue on a topic that probably belongs in the "Weird Shit Happens" thread if there is one: Earlier today at Barry Harris' house I asked him for help on today's NYTimes crossword for a clue, "With lots of animal fat" or something like that. So Barry told me the word "suet", which I wasn't familiar with. He said, "grab that dictionary over there." I reach over to this fat dictionary with over 1,000 pages. I open the book at random, and right on the page in front of me is the word SUET.

  6. Those days are long gone unfortunately. However there are many great and reasonably priced Loire reds (Cabernet Franc) such as Bernard Baudry, Languedoc Roussillon, Rhone, Beaujolais and other areas but you have to know your producers and importers.
  7. Topic already begun here
  8. Today: "Nickname of Jazz's Earl Hines"
  9. I'd have to disagree with you there - specifically in his prime (1950's). Into the 1960s, another story of course.

  12. Look where the beater on the bass drum is!
  13. Barry Harris Trio @Village Vanguard, operating at a VERY high level of artistry, at any tempo, at 83. A real treasure and inspiration.
  14. Jimmy Knepper on the right end? Doesn't look like Pepper on bari. That's the "Theme From Golden Boy"
  15. Breaking Bad is great. Stay with it.
  16. New season of Justified started tonight. Best dialogue on TV, in that inimitable Elmore Leonard tradition.
  17. McCoy in today's NY Times Crossword. Maybe this should have a thread of its own?
  18. Louis Hayes?

  20. That's the one. Was listening to this yesterday and thinking it was the only time I could think of Lee, or George Coleman for that matter, playing a Chick Corea tune.
  21. Next question: On what recording does Lee Morgan play on a Chick Corea composition? No peeking!
  22. Still in LA. Hopefully he'll return to NY one day.
  23. Saw him at the Monk percussion competition in 2000. IIRC he was one of the judges.
