  6. Ed Berger's just-released biography is excellent. "Joe Wilder and the Breaking of Barriers in American Music - Softly With Feeling." Temple University Press 2014 ISBN 978-1-4399-1127-3
  7. This sure is some lousy news to wake up to. I'll always cherish my time playing with and conversing with Joe.
  8. I believe he had a "viennese" gig billed as Bill Hardman-Junior Cook 5tet in 1987, me believe taking place at "TU Wien"......memories...... I toured with the Bill Hardman/Junior Cook Quintet through Europe in the fall of 1986. We played Jazzland in Vienna October 7-9. The rest of the group was Walter Booker and Leroy Williams.
  9. Went to the Museo Nacional del Prado yesterday. 'nuff said. Actually, as if everything else wasn't enough, seeing the Garden of Earthly Delights in person was a special treat.
  10. Courtesy of Jimmy Wormworth:
  11. See the Al Harewood thread for a great pic of Lou, Horace Parlan and Al Harewood ca. 1960-61.
  12. This was taken by Jimmy Wormworth in Detroit ca. 1960-1961 shortly after he left Lou for Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.
  13. Lou spoke at Al's funeral yesterday and said something funny: At the time Lou was touring with Horace Parlan, George Tucker and Al Harewood, club owners expected that by the end of the week's engagement, bands would typically run up a high bar tab such that they only ended up having to pay out about half of the contracted fee. But because Lou's entire quartet lived clean - no booze, no "vitamins," etc. - Lou had to fight with club owners to pay up.
  14. I have it like this: Live at the Pic. (The Picadilly, Newark) September 14, 1953 Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, Jimmy Schenk, Lloyd Turner You go To My Head Hackensack Things We Did last Summer I'll Remember April Lou's Blues Lloyd Buchanan replaces Jimmy Schenk Billie's Bounce and The Way You Look tonight Lou tells me this was his gig.
  15. http://www.smithsonianjazz.org/documents/oral_histories/Donaldson_Lou_Interview_Transcription.pdf (I've not yet tried to read through it all) This is a great interview. A real history lesson.
  16. Just learned from Monty Alexander tonight that Al Harewood passed last Thursday. Al was one of the sweetest - and swingingest. "Mr. Tip." I had the great pleasure of working with Al frequently in the 1980s, in trios or groups that included the likes of Bob Cranshaw, Larry Gales, Lou Donaldson, Pepper Adams, Benny Powell, Junior Cook and Bill Hardman. Those were the days! Al came out for Cedar's memorial last November. He looked good and seemed his usual chipper self. He divided his time between Brooklyn and Barbados. Al Harewood - a major contributor for many years and a real stylist. RIP
  17. I can't really describe it other than four bars of the worst home-studio amateur shit repeated over and over. 800-772-4642 Obviously the longer one has to stay on hold the worse it seems.
  18. Airlines, banks, credit card companies, utility companies.... I've had a few pleasant surprises, but most of the time it's pretty bad, especially when you're stuck on hold for who knows how long and are forced to listen to the most inane, repetitive, awful crap. Post your "on hold" nightmares here. I'll start: IBERIAN AIRLINES
  19. Trumpets -- Nat Pavone, Richard Williams Tenor Saxophone -- George Coleman Trombone -- Benjamin Jacobs-El Trombone, Arranged By -- Slide Hampton Baritone Saxophone -- Jay Cameron Double Bass -- Butch Warren Drums -- Vinnie Ruggiero Part I 1. Ow! 2. I Remember Clifford 3. Exodus 4. Mack The Knife Part II 1. Sister Salvation 2. Fump 3. Round Midnight 4. Summertime 5. Milestones
  20. I think #14 is "Cabaret." This type of number commonly referred to as a "flag waver."
  21. They never gave Johnny Griffin one. He was a US citizen but he lived in Europe since 1963 - maybe that was the factor.
  22. Still hitting' with that ferocious intensity. Tonight Cobb kept the pots on on at least three fast tempos in the one set - Del Sasser, Lazybird, and something else. Are Cobb, Roy Haynes and (semi-retired) Al Harewood the oldest active jazz drummers of all time?
  23. I remember hearing about that club, La Bastille. I was lucky to hear Duke that summer 1973 at Interlochen Music Camp. But I missed Ella with Tommy Flanagan at the Dallas Fairmont, not to mention any number of headliners at the Lark Club before my time like Lou Donaldson and Sonny Stitt.
