Thanks, everyone. I knew that I was going to fail to mention someone obvious, but I can't believe that I forgot Sir Roland Hanna!!! I've seen Geri Allen in Detroit, but I'm not sure whether they acknowledged her Detroit roots. I look forward to checking out the others.

Everyone knows Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan and Barry Harris. I've found myself enjoying the underrated Kirk Lightsey lately, and Kenn Cox is woefully underappreciated. Who are some other Detroit pianists worth checking out??

I picked up this one after receiving the email: Bobby Bradford and the Mo'tet - Lost in L.A. I have nothing with Bradford, so I thought that I'd give it a shot. -
I received a Kindle for Christmas, but I'm still more likely to get a book from the library or buy a used copy at a library sale or Half Priced Books. There are a ton of Jim Thompson books available for the Kindle, but it is much less expensive to buy a used copy, which can be sold down the road. The Kindle is fun to have, though. Without it, I probably never would have read Great Expectations.

I saw his quintet in February, and it was easily one of the best concerts I've ever attended. I'm particularly fond of Tati, with Stefano Bollani and Paul Motian.

Final Appeal Through Indie Gogo Recording Project

He's fantastic, but his playing with Pelt is more conservative than with his own trio. His trio set from the Village Vanguard is available for download or streaming from NPR, so I plan on giving that a listen. -

Nice lineup. I just caught JD Allen with Jeremy Pelt last week and came away impressed. -
I've been gaining a greater appreciation for his playing after recently acquiring his The Hollywood All-Star Sessions box. RIP.

I picked up Mal Waldron's The Git Go - Live at the Village Vanguard. My jaw dropped when I saw that the lineup consisted of Waldron, Charlie Rouse, Woody Shaw, Reggie Workman and Ed Blackwell. Thanks, sonnymax!

Here's wishing Kenny Barron a happy birthday. I've recently been enjoying his work with the Classical Jazz Quartet (Barron, Ron Carter, Stefon Harris and Lewis Nash). As is Ron Carter's Jazz Is My Romance, a trio date rounded out by Herb Ellis.

All That Is Tied, a solo disc, made a huge impression on me and is one for the desert island. It's OOP, but still is available from his website. When I ordered it from his site on a Thursday, it arrived two days later, which is incredibly fast.

I don't have any issues with the BYG reissue sound-wise, but I wish that the liner notes were in English. I recommend the album.

I was going to mention Potter, but I was trying to keep to saxophonists younger than 40. I thoroughly enjoy Potter, especially with his Underground group. I'm looking forward to hearing the Unity Band.

Thanks, Chuck! It's missing the April 14th session, but at least the other sessions are complete. It's strange that the producers would include a random track recorded 2 years later but not the three tracks from April 14th.

I found Hop, Skip and Jump by Johnny Hodges in the bargain bin. It has three sessions apparently recorded for Vogue in Paris in 1950 and a stray version of 'Sweet Georgia Brown'. There are 16 tracks from Paris. Are these all of the tracks that Hodges recorded in Paris that year? If not, what sessions/tracks are missing? The track listing is here. Thanks!

I attended a Jimmy Heath interview/master class on Saturday afternoon, followed by a Jimmy Heath concert in the evening. During the Q&A with the audience, I asked Heath about Hasaan. His face kind of lit up as he asked, "Hasaan? The piano player?!?" He spoke for a couple of minutes about Hasaan, mainly focusing on his eccentricities. Here are a few random bits: 1) To Hasaan's annoyance, Philly Joe called him Hot Sam. Others called him Count Langford. 2) Hasaan complained about another musician, saying "He stole my 13ths, but I got 29ths!" 3) Hasaan had the habit of buying new ties and cutting them in half, a practice that still seemed to baffle Heath. 4) Heath referred to Hasaan being avant garde before Cecil Taylor, and said that Hasaan didn't get as many gigs as other pianists, which the following story might explain. Hasaan was playing a gig with the singer Bull Moose Jackson, who was an ugly man (hence the nickname) who could sing pretty. The band was going to play 'Flying Home'(Heath sang the melody so people would know how it went). Bull Moose said to Hasaan, "Give me that intro." Hasaan proceeded to play the intro as you'd expect Hasaan to play it. Bull Moose then said, "Give me that intro again!" He couldn't find where to come in. The audience enjoyed Heath's Hasaan anecdotes, even if most of them had never heard of him before. Heath remembered that Hasaan only appeared on one album, so maybe some of them will seek it out. In my question, I also asked about John Dennis, another obscure Philly pianist. Although Heath didn't address the Dennis part, I was happy to at least learn more about Hasaan. I get really nervous when speaking in public, but Heath's stories made the rise in blood pressure worth it.

I purchased the same album. -
I've seen the ICP Orchestra once, and Bennink was such a delight to watch. Here's wishing him the best.

I occasionally disable adblock to see what ads come up. I am currently getting ads for Google Chrome, summer jazz workshops and unsigned artists radio. EDIT: I visited this thread earlier while Adblock was still disabled. I'm now getting singles ads.

I remember seeing his name come up on bass forums back in the day, so I'm surprised that I didn't learn of his passing earlier. I always meant to check out the book he wrote for electric bass, but I never got around to it. RIP. Edit: That's a nice tune and tribute video. Thanks for posting it.

Altschul and Motian are both very different drummers, and both perfect for Bley. I don't find that the Bley/Oxley combo really works, and I'm pretty sure that was Eicher's idea. The only album I have with Bley and Motian is Notes, which may have been irreparably damaged when it fell out of my car. What albums would you recommend?
-
Thanks for all of your responses. I recently purchased Ramblin', and it is one my better recent CD purchases. Altschul seems like the ideal partner for Bley.

I am fostering a one-year-old puppy that I'll likely adopt permanently. After he destroyed a library book, I'm worried about my CD collection. I wouldn't put it past him to pull a CD off of a shelf and eat it.

instant composer pool box set
Justin V replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Considering how some of ICP's albums have never made it to disc and can be hard to find, that'd be a cool box set to have. Even if I could afford to drop almost $600 on a box set after shipping, that'd be a pretty intimidating addition. It would take a long time to absorb all of that music. I just imagine this giant box set hitting my porch like a mortar shell.
