Well, what can you say? DG was a wonderful player, easily in my top five, perhaps my top two tenors. He will give me many, many hours of intense enjoyment in the years to come, even though he has passed....
Goodman's SSS was certainly advanced for his genre, but unremarkable in the grand scheme of things. For me, the whole thing is ruined by Krupa. His playing, IMHO, is amaturish. I remember seeing a video where there was a 'battle of the bands' between Goodman and Chick Webb. Webb was a far better drummer.
The Mobley Box is wonderful. I am in the enviable position of having just received the two new Selects and the JJ set, so I am temporarily Mosaic Satisfied.
July 15th- how about none other than Philly Joe Jones? Feel better now?

Oh Thank You!! I feel way better!
edit: here is a web site with some great pictures of PJJ.

The great Milt Hinton played with Cab Calloway for thirteen years, I think. On the other hand, this was only a small part of his fabulous 60 year career.
The greatest discovery in jazz is the one you make tomorrow. Maybe it's Milt Hinton or Don Ellis or Dave Douglas-- whatever gets you excited. That's the greatest.
