  1. How about the Carpenters.
  2. Twenty some years ago Ann and I made a fake BN cover for our Fred Anderson recording, inspired by Lauren Deutsch's photo. We had to set the type by hand.
  3. Why do you have to make a choice? Enjoy both for the music they present.
  4. My favorite pirate name is Jordi Pujol. He sails on the ship Fresh Sounds but hoists more threatening flags when out of sight.
  5. It might be an old logo to you, but to me it was a sign of deadly decay.
  6. The spine copy isn't much different from lp spines (which I grew up with), so I don't have a problem - but you might be older and I could understand that. Also, if I find a slim disc in the middle of my Parlan sides, I know it's Headin' South.
  7. This is (deleted, I believe) 2 discs of the Miles/Trane/Kelly/Chambers/Cobb group, and 2 discs from the next tour with Stitt replacing JC. Do you have the French concerts from the same tour? If you do, it is more of the same. I'd grab it if you like Miles and/or Trane and/or Stitt and/or the dandy rhythm section. Then get the 4 French discs. If the Dragon set is back in print, get the French discs first.
  8. 34. I store them on the shelf with my other cds.
  9. At the beginning of the '60s James began a series of very fine recordings for MGM. Some were collected in at least one Verve cd. If you like this sort of stuff, check it out.
  10. During Hank's stay in Chicago, I was living in Madison, WI. My friends John Litweiler and Larry Kart kept me abreast of performances I should attend. I managed to hear Mobley twice during this time. One time was with the "working band" mentioned, with Muhal, Rufus, Wilbur and Frank Gordon. If memory does not fail, this was a gig in a church basement on the South Side. The other time was one of Joe Segal's extravaganzas - Jug, Von, Hank and (odd man out) Hank Crawford. Maybe Larry will chime in with more info on those times. Concerning the unissued date(s) Hank mentioned: One is Slice of the Top and I always surmised the themes on Thinking of Home incorporated the film music. I'll forward this thread to Litweiler and see if he chooses to shed any light.
  11. I take it this was recorded before MacArthur Park became a hit.
  12. All this material is now included in the Night At Birdland and Three Blind Mice cds.
  13. I always considered this an extension of the NYC5 recordings. Rudy did a fabulous job from the console and the typical Impulse! presentation was fine. I find Archie needed to be "engaged" in a project to play well, and unfortunately later in his career this did not seem to happen. This is a wonderful record for reasons beyond Archie's attentive playing. A classic. A dandy AOTW. Thanks.
  14. I wanted to come back and champion the previous Bluebird reissue series of early blues. They started a complete Sonny Boy set (2 volumes issued) and got 4 discs of Tampa Red out before it died. For me the crowning achievement was the 2 disc set of Tommy McClennan. These reissues were produced by Vince Caro and Michael Omansky. I don't know either of them, but love the work they did. The sound is amazing and I even liked the graphics, especially the color combinations used. I know these have all been deleted, but you should look for them. These guys did it right. I saw a list of future releases planned but the series was killed. What a loss. Now back to your regular programming.
  15. Please don't tell me this is a deal breaker for you! I have 16 bit transfers which sound better than 24 bits. Let you ears decide, not your eyes. The answer is yes, they are 24 bit. I would guess almost all cds issued in the last few years have been "so-called" 24 bit transfers. Most studios have the equipment and it would be a pain in the ass to dig out the old stuff. jmjk, please don't take this personally - I just needed to vent about technology and the people using it.
  16. First I thought I'd be Chuck RCA, then Chuck CBS, then Chuck BMG - but I missed vowels.
  17. I had avoided the anthologies, but this morning found the first three in the clearance section at Columbia House - going for $2.99. Vol. 4 was still going for full price.
  18. In graphic design circles Reid Miles was famous for mixing fonts. He called it something like "the liberation of type".
  19. Dexter Gordon on "Something Different".
  20. Finding the rightful heirs is not easy if they don't contact potential payees. I am in a quandry about royalties to more than one item in my small catalog.
  21. 98% of the time I'll take an artist photo on the cover. I find the happy/laughing photo of LY entirely compatible with the music on the disc. "More adventurous" music is in no way somber. As a BN "student" since the '50s, I think the cover is a dandy. I don't dislike the LT covers, but they were a product of the time.
  22. Sorry but I have a huge problem getting past what I hear as a really ugly tone. Ellis's name is usually an "exit sign" for me. Sidemen override this sometimes, and I've met him (he's an amazingly nice guy). I just hate his tone.
  23. Just get it. It may or may not be the best RCA, but it is very, very fine.
  24. The previous domestic cd was black.
  25. Screw the label, is the cover the original brown?
