  6. As the photo loaded, I thought you'd posted a picture of a zebra's ass. Close, but no cigar for me.
  7. If it is legit you should be able to find it on the Microsoft site. If it ain't there, avoid it.
  8. Chris, you were there 20+ years before me. You must have stories about Weinstock/Rudy. Please tell us.
  9. I see they've copied 17 tracks from the Uptown Mingus disc. Bastards!
  10. Twenty-something years ago I talked with Rudy about the differences between BN, Prestige, Savoy, Verve, Impulse, CTI and Muse. This was before the beatification of BN. This occasion was my "audition", to see if RVG would accept me as a client. He was in semi-retirement. Willis Jackson's "Single Action" was the project that day. I continued my probes on subsequent sessions with him. He said Alfred had very strong opinions about the sound he wanted and he did everything possible to meet his demands. Alfred also showed up to supervise the lp mastering - no other producer did that. The rest of this post is "my interpretation" of other things he said. Weinstock (copying BN's move to RVG) wanted it cheap and fast, as did Savoy. Alfred wanted stronger drums than the other two. The producers seemed to get what they requested, unless it was something developed by one of the others. Rudy said he never tried out new equipment on Lion, but did first runs on Prestige dates 'cause Bob wouldn't notice/care. He took it to BN when he felt comfortable with it. Talking to Rudy about this stuff was like asking a lawyer about a client's files. At the end of one session when I asked what I owed him he said "I always handed Alfred a blank invoice and he filled it in. Here - fill yours out". I declined and handed the clipboard back to him. No way could I pay what I owed him.
  11. Cubs have been my team since the late '50s and the Red Sox have been the only AL team I've cared about since the early '70s when I drank untold quantities of beer in the Fenway bleachers. Let me dream a few days.

  17. Hey, soon enough Eric was grooving on the Butthole Surfers or some such group.
  18. This thread is inspired by AfricaBrass's posting in the Verve Elite thread about the therapeutic qualities of the Konitz set. Our kids Eric (now 33) and Carla (29) grew up with musicians all around. Malachi Favors, Bud Freeman, Charles Tyler, Hal Russell, Roscoe, etc. were around the house while they were young. They also attended recording sessions. When Carla was in college she took a "Jazz History" class and was assigned a paper on a "musician of choice" (pending the instructor's approval). She chose Roscoe Mitchell and the prof agreed. She called me and asked if I'd mind if she contacted Roscoe for an interview. I said fine and her teacher was amazed by the "primary source" of her paper. I am still touched by an experience with Eric early in his life. While still a toddler, late at night he wandered out of his room to ask what I was playing. It was a Gato Barbieri lp called Under Fire. He asked to see the cover. Then he went back to bed without comment. A few months later the scene was repeated and he asked what I was playing - it was a Charlie Parker Spotlight lp. He asked to see the cover, asked if I knew him and I told him he died before I could meet him. Eric said "then I can never meet him", jumped off the sofa and cried for about an hour before he was exhausted and fell asleep. About 6 months passed, I was listening to a Johnny Hodges Verve lp, Eric was at my feet asking the usual questions. I said I'd met Hodges, but he'd died. He snuggled closer to me with tears welling in his eyes and said "Easy come, easy go". For members old enough, there must be a bunch of funny or "heart warming" stories.
