I couldn't identify the tenor at the time. I might do better now 30+ years later. I don't remember being very impressed with the date at the time.

Favorite later versions of Birth of the Cool tunes
Chuck Nessa replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My favorite composition of this collection is Israel and my favorite recording is from Carisi's "ill fated" RCA Workshop project. Great versions of Springsville, Barry's Tune and Lestorion Mode on this one too. -
I had (have?) the reference acetate in the ebay entry (or another copy). Hadn't thought about it in years, don't remember selling it. I might have turned it over to Bob Koester.

I think it is time for Mike to revisit the math in his first sentence.

After previous discussions, I'm pleased to note a new disc by Foreman's trio with Bobby Broom and Greg Rockingham. Also in this release are cds by Kahil El'Zabar/David Murray, Jeff Parker/Scott Fields and Ernest Dawkins. Interested parties can buy these from me.

AOTW Aug. 15-21: Carl Fontana, THE GREAT FONTANA
Chuck Nessa replied to White Lightning's topic in Album Of The Week
Still availavle and I can supply it. B-) -
Laz, if you had checked the link Brownie gave, you would see the CD Universe price is 5 day old news.
-
The cds of this material are dubbed from vinyl.
-
Looks like the Griffin is missing a track. I hate it when they do stuff like that.

Johnny Dodds.

According to Bruyninckx, this is the 2nd record (of 2) from "Embers West", New York, January 1965. Time to buy a discography?

I just saw the following on the English Warnie site: I've received word from Safford Chamberlain that his book "An Unsung Cat - the life and music of Warne Marsh" will be published as a paperback towards the end of October. It will contain some revisions, but the photographs which featured in the hardback edition, will not be present in this new edition. But, helpfully, there will be an index which was a glaring omission from the original. The book will again be published by Scarecrow Press and will cost $20 - $25. This is good news ('cept for the loss of photos). If you have any interest in Warne get this fine book.

The cd has 10 songs and clocks in at about 58 minutes. -
A couple of points about some Transitions, etc: Delmark's Byrd/First Flight was issued on Transition as #5 and it predates the other Transitions as Byrd's debut recording as leader. The personnel includes Yusef Lateef, Bernard McKinney (aka Kiane Zawadi), Barry Harris, Alvin Jackson and Frank Gant. Delmark's Ra/Sun Song was originally on Jazz by Sun Ra (Transition #10). The bonus track, Swing A Little Taste, was on the sampler #30. Ra/Sound of Joy was recorded by Transition but first issued by Delmark. The Larry Marable Jazz West date was issued in the US on BN CDP 7 8440 2 in 1989. It contains a bonus track, from PJ, with James Clay, Bobby Timmons, Jimmy Bond and Peter Littman playing In A Sentimental Mood. This was a Clay "test recording" at the end of a Chet Baker session.

The few Debut originals I've seen were styrene.
-
Everyone keeps saying Transition "vinyl" but the Transitions were injection molded with styrene, a cheap substitute and very brittle. You can spot these since they have labels attached with glue and they "ring" when tapped on the edge. If you have any old Columbia 45s, you know what I mean.

Who remembers a series call Sound Stage?
Chuck Nessa replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Our apartment was 2 blocks from the studio. Our mailman was a student there and dropped tickets for all the jazz shows in my box. I never met the guy, but he left notes with the tickets. Saw a shitload of great musicians there. My favorite show was a 10 hour taping of a tribute to John Hammond. Everyone they could round up from Sonny Terry to Bob Dylan. Jo Jones was a hoot! -
Ann and I are leaving in the morning for a few days of wandering through northern MI and the a week at someplace north of Barrie, Ontario. See ya on the 14th.

Monk is dead and he gave us much more than we should expect. Let this shit go. Nothing is gained.

"Blowin' In From Chicago" tonight on Night Lights
Chuck Nessa replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This reminds me of Terry Martin's fine piece in Down Beat in 1967(?) called Blowin' Out in Chicago. The piece was about Roscoe Mitchell. -
Tonight, the Earl Hines/Paul Gonsalves quartet with Al Hall on bass and Jo Jones on the drums. What a wonderful (an neglected) date. Over the Rainbow is a classic.

Chuck Nessa replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I look forward to a report on the gig. I have not heard him in 20+ years and am curious about his development.
