Thanks to all for the orders (a few days left) and some info for Okka fans. I ran out of the Brotzmann 3 disc set, re-ordered from them and Bruno called to tell me the set is out of print. I suggest anyone interested search for it and get it now. Bruno said he still had 300 covers and might someday repress it "if he could".

Couple of things. Memory fades, but I'm not sure the "2 takes" of "Crab" are really different. Next - the new Uptown Eager cd starts with a set at the Hi-Hat with about 20 minutes of fine performances with Allen and the Twardzik trio.

About 3 years ago, Ben Young (then employed by Universal) called to ask about the possibility of Coltrane tapes from the Down Beat fest of 1965 (quartet + Archie). I had attended the performance, and assured him no tapes exist. The Russell "5 Spot" disc had just been reissued and I asked him about the "KC" date. He said they decided to issue the "5 Spot" disc because of name recognition. He also said there was a bunch of unissued material (no mention of extra tunes or alternates) from the "KC" dates. Lest anyone is fooled, all the aforementioned material is from studio sessions in NYC.

After all that, I'm getting dizzy.

Now I see they are together a bit on the Shank set. I'm bummed to see "Ivory Hunters" is missing from the BB box.

Yup, it's Mars material. Mars material was later reissued by Discovery on 2 lps and eventually on a single cd.

Just to clear some confusion here - The master takes from 1936-51 would take at least 7 cds with 25/26 tracks per disc.

Believe me, the wrong guys lost. This was an effort by the big labels to protect "music stores" from mass merchandisers who could sell music for "nothing" to attract shoppers. We lose. Stores like Tower and "mom and pops" are defeated. Big, really big business wins again.

Mike, that's what Ira told me too. Remember, Deep is only a moniker. Jeez, I know more about "some white guy" than Deep.

I got mine in a fairly complicated deal from Columbia House. The set was on sale for $84.99, which let me pick 4 free cds. This shipment cost a total of $113.32, and this purchase earned enough bonus points to order 2 more discs. When this is completed I will have a total of 16 cds for $119.24 - average disc price $7.45.

I thought I had a snappy response, but........

Six cds on the Classics label (1936-41 master takes only) and two cds on Neatworks (1936-41 all the alternate takes). Classics specializes in the master takes of all the old 'classics'. Neatworks has a series of the alternate takes matching up with the Classics.

I dumped the GRP set and bought the first six Classics and the first two Neatworks to obtain all the studio Basie/Pres/Decca/Columbia 1936-41. The GRPs are bass thin.

You will be more than happy. Delightful.

Off topic, but giving a bit of insight to Sonny's personality. In the early/mid '70s Roscoe Mitchell was operating something called CAC in the Detroit area. Part of this was a "youth program" teaching youngsters about jazz. Roscoe arranged to have Rollins speak to the kids. After the event the kids gathered around Sonny and asked for autographs. Thinking of Sonny as an idol and inspiration, after the kids were through Roscoe asked for an autograph too. Sonny looked at Roscoe and said "I'm not signing for you - you're 'one of the guys'". RM relayed this to me in 1977, iirc.

Mal Waldron - The Quest (click here to buy) Jim picked me for this week. I selected this date 'cause it related to a couple of recent threads - Old Slippers and Dolphy sideman dates. I got this as a new release back in my college days and played it weekly for about a year. Lots of memories with this one, and Charli Persip kicks ass.

Don't ignore the Curtis Counce dates. Some great Land on those.

Rudy Collins is the drummer on Love For Sale (not the listed DC). Charles is on Jazz Advance. World of CT and Air were recorded 10 - 12/13 - 60. The November listing is a mistake. The other 3 Candids were all done in January of 1961.
