catesta Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 I just purchased the James Clay date "I Let a Song Go out of My Heart" and George Coleman's "My Horns Of Plenty". As I wait for the cds to arrive, how excited should I be? Great dates, no? Quote
JSngry Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Not piss-your-pants-like-a-little-baby-man excited, but don't miss a single day checking the mail, if you know what I mean. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 That Clay disc is quite solid. I used to have it, think I loaned it out, and never got it back. It won't change your life, but it's a good disc. Quote
EKE BBB Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 ... George Coleman's "My Horns Of Plenty"... Curiously, I´ve been listening to George Coleman´s "My horns of plenty" today. It´s a great date, IMHO. Quote
JohnS Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 I don't know about the Coleman Catesta, but I think you'll love the Clay cd. A very nice programme of standards. Quote
Joe Christmas Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 I like the Clay disc quite a bit (on Antilles, right?). Those 80's recordings seem to soften his sound a bit, but they're very good nonetheless. Another you might keep an eye out for, featuring Clay, is Don Cherry's ART DECO, same label. Quote
catesta Posted March 9, 2004 Author Report Posted March 9, 2004 ART DECO does indeed look like a winner. Quote

jlhoots Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart & Art Deco are excellent. I don't have the Coleman. Quote
Brad Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 There aren't that many Clay led date so I'd get excited and run for the bathroom. The Coleman is solid but not spectacular. Quote

JSngry Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Now, if you had picked up a copy of Coleman's AT YOSHI'S to go w/the Clay, I'd say grab the Depends and head for the mailbox... Quote
catesta Posted March 16, 2004 Author Report Posted March 16, 2004 Got the Clay cd yesterday, good stuff. Quote
Brad Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 (edited) Dude, That' all you gotta say "good stuff". It's more than that. Do have his disc with Newman "Wide Open Spaces" or "Tenorman" under the leadership of Lawrence Marable. If you don't, you gotta get 'em NOW!! Edited March 16, 2004 by Brad Quote

Yes sir, I've got "Wide Open Spaces" that was what really made me want to look for more from Clay. You be right about being more than just good stuff, I gave it a real listen lastnight, it is a bad ass motha of a session, I'm lovin' it. Quote

Sorry, I'm on it, I was forced to sit in a meeting most of yesterday and never had a chance. Going from f***in' meeting to f***in' meeting. That describes much of my work day Quote
garthsj Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 (edited) Speaking of James Clay .. it is unfortunate that "circumstances" surrounding the jazz life prevented him from making more albums during his lifetime. Both his tenor and flute playing were outstanding. I do not believe that anyone has yet mentioned his terrific work on Red Mitchell's first album "Presenting Red Mitchell" (Contemporary) ... where he is featured extensively, with Lorraine Geller, who also died young, on piano. This was the first time that I heard Clay, and that album became a favorite of mine. It is still available .. see below. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...685&style=music Garth. mikeweil Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Of all the Clay I have, and it's almost all of his sessions, ART DECO sounds the best, followed by his Jazz West debut (reissued on Blue Note). Musically they are all worth having. Again: Don't know the Coleman Quote
