tranemonk Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 just saw this on Tower.com.... http://www.tower.com/songbooks-oscar-peter.../wapi/113497240 Anybody got any info or ideas? :excited: Will this replicate the Mosaic set at all? (My instinct is that it won't since it's being put out by Verve and Cuscuna might have been involved).. How many cds? thanks Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) Hmmm. . . . Just because it's on Verve and Cuscuna may have been involved (I'd say may not have been involved), doesn't mean that duplication is unlikely per se. That said, there's nothing on the Verve website about this. Seems to be an import? Weird. Edited May 20, 2009 by jazzbo Quote
J.A.W. Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) These might be the Songbook sessions that were recorded in the late 1950s. The Mosaic only covered most of the 1951-1953 dates. Edited May 20, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote
crisp Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 It's possible that this could be the complete Songbooks from 1959 in Originals-style packaging, like the Coltrane and Getz Bossa Nova sets: Oscar Peterson Plays The Duke Ellington Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The George Gershwin Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Richard Rodgers Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Jerome Kern Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Harry Warren Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Irving Berlin Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Harold Arlen Song Book Oscar Peterson Plays The Jimmy McHugh Song Book Some reasons for thinking it's this rather than the 1951/2 sessions on the Mosaic: 1) Verve is reissuing Peterson's The Jerome Kern Songbook in the Originals series the week before 2) The 1951/2 albums were called Oscar Peterson Plays Cole Porter, etc. No use of the term "songbook" 3) Although Amazon has it as an import, meaning it could be just another European PD release of the 1951/2 sessions, both Tower and CD Universe have Verve (US) So I'm cautiously optimistic. Good spot, tranemonk! Quote
tranemonk Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 I'm hoping you're right... At less than $40 this would be quite the coup... if it is this... It would be VERY COOL... to have nearly all the OP from 1951-53!!!!!! Ken Dryden Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 It seems strange that it lists this title as one disc.... I'm hoping you're right... jazzbo Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 That's not at all uncommon online with titles before release. Quote
tranemonk Posted May 21, 2009 Author Report Posted May 21, 2009 I'm thinking that Cuscuna was involved since the Mosaic set came out recently... In digging through the vaults he must have known that this other material was there (and presumably in good condition).... so that's why I'm thinking there's probably little if any (I HOPE) duplication between the upcoming set and the Mosaic... I wonder how many CD's it will be??? My guess is probably 5.. maybe 4??? Wonder if there'll be any previously unissued stuff???? Quote
king ubu Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 if it's "Originals" it will be as many discs as there are albums... no packaging other than a box around the individual discs, I guess... still not sure if I need to get the Mosaic or not... but I suppose eventually I will... Quote
Alec Posted May 24, 2009 Report Posted May 24, 2009 Amazon.ca lists this as a 1 cd "Best of Songbooks" with a release date of June 16th. I wish it were the whole set! Quote

I think this is way too cheap to be all the originals in Originals packaging. Mysterious. We'll see I guess. Still don't think Cuscuna had anything to do with this. Would like to be wrong, but it's been a long time since he had any involvment with a Verve set. Quote
David Ayers Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) No. Well it sure as heck isn't this one then... Edited May 31, 2009 by David Ayers Quote
tranemonk Posted May 31, 2009 Author Report Posted May 31, 2009 I'm actually beginning to think that is the one.... No. Well it sure as heck isn't this one then... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 I don't think so. Neither Avid nor Not Now have any association with Verve or Universal. Quote
tranemonk Posted June 1, 2009 Author Report Posted June 1, 2009 so assuming you're right... Are we still in mystery land as to what exactly this set is???? I don't think so. Neither Avid nor Not Now have any association with Verve or Universal. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 You know as much as I do. Shows how bad the jazz reissue situation is. . . they bother to put something out, but don't even put any advance information about it out there. I guess we'll know something in a few weeks. Quote

JETman Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Anybody have the lowdown on this yet? It's no longer listed as an import at CDU. It would be really crappy of Verve/Universal to include the Jerome Kern Songbook cd in this after releasing it separately the week before. Quote
crisp Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 ...but not as crappy as releasing a boxed set of five Stan Getz bossa nova albums, two of which had been released as VMEs and one of which was only available as part of the box. That was annoying. Quote
tranemonk Posted June 12, 2009 Author Report Posted June 12, 2009 okay... I'm sure I'm going to get slammed by someone... but I ordered my set blind... Tower had a ridiculous price... and I figure if it is useless... I'll just send it back.... Whatever it is ... it will be out Tuesday... I've got my fingers crossed.... :excited: Quote
