ghost of miles Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 (edited) Fab Four Jazz: the Beatles and Jazz in the 1960s Music from Stanley Turrentine, Woody Herman, Sonny Criss, Lee Morgan, Bud Shank, etc., plus some commentary from historian Michael McGerr. Some links there as well to Martin Williams' parody of fellow critics reviewing Beatles albums, Ella singing "Can't Buy Me Love," and more. Teasing the Korean Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 When I was young(er), the Beatles epitomized the 60s. Now, the sixties are all about Brasil 66, Burt Bacharach, Bossa Nova, Italian soundtracks, etc. I almost never listen to the Beatles, and prefer jazz and sleazy listening covers of their tunes - especially covers of their psychedelic numbers by aging jazzers. These are so much more subversive than the real thing. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 TTK, you might want to check this out (if you don't already have it): Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 TTK, you might want to check this out (if you don't already have it): I bought it and immediately unloaded the Beatles' own inferior interpretation. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 In spite of the Ellington sides, I avoided jazz covers of Beatle tunes. Thanks for putting them in one place. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 In spite of the Ellington sides, I avoided jazz covers of Beatle tunes. Thanks for putting them in one place. Ellington's version of "All My Loving" sounds like an outtake from "Afro Bossa." Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 9, 2009 Author Report Posted September 9, 2009 Up for the general 09/09/09 heck of it. Fab Four Jazz: the Beatles and Jazz in the 1960s Quote

Brad Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 I obviously missed that one way back when. I will try to listen tonight. Thanks Ghost. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 my favorite Beatle cover was by Dexter Gordon, of "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" Quote
GA Russell Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 I'll give it a listen! AccuJazz has its own Beatle Jazz station. Much of what I have heard has been later-Beatle compositions. Quote
