mgraham333 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Gil Melle - Complete Blue Note 50's Sessions I ordered one and it says shipping soon... I'll believe it when I have it in my hands. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply. A new scheme? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 How can they get away with that? Quote
zen archer Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Amazon has also been doing this with Movies , offering DVD-Rs on some hard to find titles from the 40/50s. Quote
Claude Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) It could be that Amazon has a licensing deal to make on-demand copies of certain OOP titles, just like Arkiv Music has for OOP Universal Classics titles http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/AlbumGroup?album_group=8 http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/ar...in_circulation/ Edited November 24, 2008 by Claude Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Report back on the packaging as well, if you don't mind. I'd be curious about the quality and contents of that on these 'CDR' type reissues. Quote
bluesbro Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Im not paying 20 bucks to amazon for a CDR Quote

At first it seemed weird, but if this is a way to keep good music available, maybe it's for the best. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) Strictly speaking, a CD-R is not an "Audio CD." If they can legitimately sell CD-Rs on Amazon, they should at least specify that in the format field rather than in the small print. Edited November 24, 2008 by Teasing the Korean Quote
sidewinder Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Damn - and I was hoping my spare original would pay for my pension.. :rsmile: Quote

I'm a lot more encouraged by this than I am by the whole download thing, if the packaging matches the original CD and if there is a legal secondary market for them (meaning I can resell it if I decide I don't like it and don't want to keep it). I don't know if a secondary market will exist , how would someone know if you didn't just burn it yourself ?....and is it any better that Amazon or who ever burned the disc ? Quote

sjarrell Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 My question: Why isn't it available to download at Amazon? Quote
mgraham333 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 I opted for the SuperSaver shipping (threw in a couple of Connoisseurs on sale) so it won't be here until December 3 or 4. When it arrives I will post a full report on the quality of the discs and packaging. Quote

montg Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Is there an appreciable difference between a cd-r and the original cd? This same cd-r deal is also available for Reminiscing at Blue Note Reminiscing at Blue Note Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 CD-Rs unfortunately do not have the longevity of CDs. Also, it depends on the software that was used to make the CD-R. Some are more accurate than others. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Wouldn't it be a nice touch if these titles were delivered as CD-RW:s, so that you can erase them if the music is not to you liking? Quote
Claude Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Also, it depends on the software that was used to make the CD-R. Some are more accurate than others. It's actually the ripping of the source CD that is more prone to data errors than the writing of the CD-R copy. So this problem also exists for commercial downloads, as the files are usually taken from the existing CD release. Of course it's not difficult to make accurate copies if you care about it and use the right drive, software and settings . Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Just received my copy. Haven't opened it yet, because I'm not sure if I want to keep it. Front cover image looks clean, not like a cheap xerox or anything. Has the black connoisseur series band on the left. Above the bar code in microscopic print, it says "Manufactured by CreateSpace, Scotts Valley, CA." I'm thinking of sending it back because I didn't realize it was a CD-R at first. It's fine that Amazon sells these, but CD-R should be specified in the format, IMHO. What do think I should do? Quote
