jacknife Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 (edited) I pick this album by one of the truely underappreciated greats on the Tenor Sax..Clifford Jordan. Every tune on this disc is magical especially the track dedicated to John Coltrane. Lets give Cliff his due! This disc is still available from Dusty Groove for those who haven't experienced this masterpiece. Edited October 23, 2003 by jacknife Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 A superb choice. Top drawer. 5-Stars. Two thumbs up. Way to go!!! Quote
jacknife Posted October 23, 2003 Author Report Posted October 23, 2003 After reading the Clifford Jordan thread in the Artists section, I figured Rooster would approve of my selection...and it only took him 5 minutes to give the thumbs up Quote
SEK Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 This is my favorite Clifford Jordan recording and one of my most prized recordings ever! Thanks for picking "Glass Bead Games" Quote
Soul Stream Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 Super choice. I've been eyeing this for a while and now I've got a good excuse to pick it up!!!! Quote
ralphie_boy Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 For some reason, I didn't dig this session after listening to it once or twice. I then sold it to our good friend Rooster Ties. Quote
Clunky Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 was this a double LP when it was originally issued as the CD is quite lengthy. Quote
JSngry Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 was this a double LP when it was originally issued Yep. Quote
jacknife Posted October 25, 2003 Author Report Posted October 25, 2003 This disc is still available from Dusty Groove for those who haven't experienced this masterpiece. Not any more! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 Yahhhh! I was hoping Jacknife would choose this one. I take credit for introducing Jacknife to this wonderful session. Quote
Noj Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 This disc is still available from Dusty Groove for those who haven't experienced this masterpiece. Not any more! I must have got the last copy in stock. Dusty Groove does have that great feature where one can request to be informed via email when something comes back in stock. Quote
catesta Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 I saw one on half.com for about $17. Quote
Out2Lunch Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 Dusty Groove sold it for 11.99. Its been my experience that they re-stock items pretty quickly. Hello Catesta, how are the sitar lessons going? Quote
catesta Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 Hello Catesta, how are the sitar lessons going? Going very well, thanks for asking. I'm expecting to sign with Blue Note any time now. I figure worse case scenario is they will pass on my deal and give one to my daughter. She plays piano and sings ya know. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted October 26, 2003 Report Posted October 26, 2003 I'm expecting to sign with Blue Note any time now. Sorry dude, got to first pay your dues on Vee-Jay or Savoy. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 I saw this for £3 the other week. Hope it's still there next time I go to... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 This is my favorite post '60s Jordan date. I still have it on vinyl. His reading of the Lord's Prayer is worth the price of admission (in typical bebopper style, Clifford changed the title and claimed copyright ) - all the rest are "bonus tracks" for me. Quote
Noj Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 This is my first full length Clifford Jordan, though I already had a different version the song "John Coltrane" on a 32Jazz compilation--when I saw it on the track listing I sprang at the opportunity to hear similar music. I rate GLASS BEAD GAMES exactly as highly as Rooster Ties did on the first page of this thread. I am looking forward to reading some typically verbose dissection of this fine specimine... B) Quote
JohnS Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 (edited) When this double lp first came out is was something of a lighthouse in a sea of mediocre electro jazz. I liked it from the start. Jordan's gathered a nice bunch of attractive and sometimes striking compositions for this date. None of them are overlong and Jordan makes the most of the melodic and rhytmic possibilties. And what a nice sound he has. Of the two piano/bass teams, I find Stanley Cowell and Bill Lee preferable. Billy Higgins is okay too!! Nice one jacknife. Edited November 4, 2003 by JohnS Quote
JSngry Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Don't know how accurate this is, but a friend who played and hung w/Clifford for a while in the early 80s says that Jordan considered IN THE WORLD his best, or at least favorite album, and I'd go along with that. But this one comes in at a photofinish for second as far as I'm concerned. Quote
jacknife Posted November 7, 2003 Author Report Posted November 7, 2003 I’ve had Glass Bead Games now for a month or two, thanks to the recommendation from Conn500. It has easily moved up towards the top of my all-time favorite list! While I wouldn’t call this disc laid back, it is very relaxing to me. Perfect for those late night listens when I like to turn off all the lights and kick back in the recliner and close my eyes and float into the music. As the liner notes say, “let the music caress your soul” and it does a great job at that. I tend to agree with JohnS about preferring Quartet 1 with Stanley Cowell and Bill Lee but Cedar Walton and Sam Jones are no slouches either! Considering how much I like this disc, I am now very curious about In The World as JSngry mentions. Is this one on cd, any suggestions where to find it? Quote
king ubu Posted November 7, 2003 Report Posted November 7, 2003 I don't seem to be able to find this one for a reasonable price here in Switzerland (and amazon.de does not seem to deliver it... well, at least they did not yet cancel my order, so there is hope still). Petty I cannot participate here, as I like Jordan a lot! I recommend picking up the two 32jazz dates, as long as they're around! ubu Quote
ralphie_boy Posted November 7, 2003 Report Posted November 7, 2003 I guess I have to give this session another try. As I mentioned, for some reason it didn't click with me the first couple of times that I played it. Quote
Clunky Posted November 7, 2003 Report Posted November 7, 2003 The Clifford Jordan Camden 2CD set issued in the UK a few years ago is well worth tracking down. It was complied from 3 or 4 Muse LPs , although I am not sure if any of these were presented in their entirety. Quote
