Big Al Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Ohhh, if only I had the time!!! BLUE MODE is one of my favorite albums EVER!!! More to come later. I wanna post while listening to it later! Quote
sidewinder Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Just have the 'Blue Mode'. I've always found it a bit cookie-cutterish and uninspired but will give it another listen. The one thing I do like about it is the Mati Klarwein cover art. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Anyone have a cover scan? Mati Klarwein - what label is this on? Quote
Chas Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Anyone have a cover scan? Mati Klarwein - what label is this on? Taken from this 1965 painting , " New York Angel " : More of Klarwein's cover art here . Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Well, Love Bug is just an all out classic...I especially love "I Say A Little Prayer" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." From Blue Mode, "Bus Ride" and "Orange Peel" basically define what organ soul jazz is. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Never would have recognized Klarwein from the excerpt they used as a cover - have to admit I find the whole pic much better. A Klarwein cover on a Blue Note LP - who would have thunk it ..... Quote

Soulstation1 Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 i need to score a copy of blue mode i just have the blue break beats disc Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 I'm more a fan of Love Bug, in part because of who's on it, but the're both good, dirty fun. "Hold On, I'm Coming" (bonus cut on Love Bug) is my fav since I'm a huge stax fan. Have to think about what my fav solo is... Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 my favorite solo is the drum solo in the first track on love bug. however i find that the album gets a bit too mellow after that. though now that i am more mature perhaps i would enjoy it more. Quote
Kyo Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Two albums - isn't that cheating? I'll play both of those today. . . . Right after I'm through with the Eric Dolphy Complete Prestige box that I got yesterday! Quote

I agree. If anyone wants to know why I keep banging on about the genius of Idris Muhammad, compare Love bug to Blue Mode and hear the difference he makes. Hot Rod, the first and best track from Love Bug is all Idris. In the sleeve notes Wilson says that he gave this one to Idris to his own thing with, and what a groove. I don't mind one track albums if the one track is as good as this. (There are other good moments on Love Bug including the title track). Blue Mode is a more consistent LP but for my money, the man IM is sorely missing. Quote

Having said that, though, I'm glad he's not, just because of the sound that percolates the grooves on MODE. I'm sure Idris could've done that with one hand tied behind his back; question is would he have been content to just ride the groove the way Tommy Derrick does? Interesting thought, nonetheless!
