Tom in RI Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 I have some credit at Cadence to spend, looking at the Mario Pavone titles on Playscape. Can anyone vouch for these? Thanks. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Orange & Boom are both excellent (IMHO). Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I've heard great things about Orange. Only familiar with "old shit" on Alacra, not the new stuff so much. Quote
sal Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Orange & Boom are both excellent (IMHO). Ditto. Tony Malaby kills on these. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I would suggest another bassist - Quote
JohnS Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 If it features Peter Madsen on piano ( and most of Pavone's groups do) that's a bonus. Quote
kh1958 Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Sharpeville is a good one (with Thomas Chapin). If it features Peter Madsen on piano ( and most of Pavone's groups do) that's a bonus. Quote
sal Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I would suggest another bassist - Reading this post comes as no surprise. Quote
sal Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Its no suprise anymore that when someone starts a thread seeking any type of recommendation or advice, or if they are promoting a piece of work or a live show that they feel is special, that more than half the time you will eventually chime in your negative opinion, even when nowhere in the thread title is your opinion being asked for. It would just be nice if you could save your negativity for the opinion threads, rather than pissing in every punch bowl that you possibly can. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 (edited) well, it does ask what "you" (or I, in this case), recommend. Just trying to help. I figured you guys are tired of reading nothing but good reviews in all the standard jazz mags. Sometimes it helps to have a second opinion. You should not fear this - and I'm sure Mario would agree - if you want happy talk, you should be reading the fan mags - Edited January 22, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 (edited) and let's look at reality - the only thread, recently, that I recall, in which I disagreed with praise for the subject, was Dexter Gordon - can you name a few more? I'm getting old and I tend to forget - Edited January 22, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I prefer liquor in my punch bowl, so if anybody can provide that, maybe we'll all enjoy Pavone's playing a little better! He's not the first person I think of in terms of contemporary bassist-composers (Barry Guy or Mark Dresser...), but he's still done some nice work. Shodo, which AFAIK is not on CD, is a very strong recording. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I like the duet CD with Braxton - Quote
JohnS Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 Mario Pavone's Nu Trio 'Remberering Thomas (Knitting Factory). Great trio album. Quote
Tom in RI Posted January 23, 2006 Author Report Posted January 23, 2006 Thanks, everyone, for your feedback. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 (edited) on behalf of Sal, let me say that you are welcome - and I still don't like Dexter Gordon - but I do like children and small animals - and walks on the beach, and sunsets in the summer - the moon on a winter night, the sound of sea spray in the wind - and the smell of napalm in the morning - Edited January 23, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote

Man with the Golden Arm Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I think there's a Bill Evans recording here!? Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 yes - how my heart sings! it has wings - and these are only a few of my favorite things... Quote
Dmitry Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 Tom, I assume you have the Sky Piece already? Night Bird Song is another excellent Chapin-Pavone disc. Quote
