Rooster_Ties Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 (edited) MartyJazz was kind enough to provide me with some discographical info for the Woody Shaw date that I sent out as a bonus with BFT#25. FYI, I'll create the real BFT discussion threads later tonight (I'm in a bit of a rush at the moment). I don't have anything particularly profound to say about this Woody Shaw date, other than I think it's one of THE very best performances I've ever heard from Woody -- and more generally speaking, I think the entire band is on fire (especially Mulgrew Miller). I also have a soft spot for "trumpet plus piano trio" recordings. Hope everyone enjoys this extra Woody Shaw concert -- it's one of my all-time favorite "unreleased" live dates -- and I'd love to hear what people think of it. (And amazing as the performance is, the sound quality is pretty "top-drawer" too.) Rooster T. sidewinder Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Interesting that Steve Turre wasn't in the lineup that night. The group at Ronnie Scotts I caught those two nights (which had Turre) played many of the same numbers. 'You and The Night...', 'Katrina Ballerina' and 'Organ Grinder' bring back very fond memories. Looking forward to this ! Quote
RDK Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Listening to this now in fact. Very good sound too. I assume this was a radio broadcast? Quote

MartyJazz Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 MartyJazz was kind enough to provide me with some discographical info for the Woody Shaw date that I sent out as a bonus with BFT#25. Give credit where it's due. DSGTrane is an absolute Woody Shaw fanatic, so I knew to go to him for the discographical data. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 11, 2005 Author Report Posted May 11, 2005 Just bumping this one up, in case anyone has had the chance to spin the bonus Woody Shaw concert I sent out with my BFT. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Aw, HELL yeah--this date is SICK. Never really heard much Woody Shaw before now *ducks*; rest assured that will change in the future! Thanks for adding this to your BFT, Tom! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 11, 2005 Author Report Posted May 11, 2005 That's why I couldn't resist including this date with my BFT. I knew it would be a pain in the ass to send out -- not one -- but TWO bonus discs. BUT, I also knew that this particular date was absolutely worth all the extra hassle, every damn bit of it. Quote
catesta Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 The cds I received have Woody Shaw written on them, but contain a live performance of Barbara Streisand. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 She plays a helluva nose flute! Quote
MartyJazz Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 The cds I received have Woody Shaw written on them, but contain a live performance of Barbara Streisand. But I understand she sings "Sweet Love of Mine" on it. Quote
Noj Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 I listened to this last night--what a show! These guys were on fire! Thanks for including it, Tom. I'll be looking into some Mulgrew Miller! The only problem is a scratch right at the beginning of the drum solo of disc one, track two. It won't let me play it all the way through. Concurrent with the grain, bummer. Quote
catesta Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 The cds I received have Woody Shaw written on them, but contain a live performance of Barbara Streisand. But I understand she sings "Sweet Love of Mine" on it. That is correct, and while playing the nose flute, it's really not all that bad. B-) I may be the lucky one after all. Quote
tooter Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I listened to both discs last evening. Very good sessions indeed - some of the best Woody I've heard. Thanks a lot, Tom, for the extra treat. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 So when is Rooster Tie Records (I can see the logo in my head!) going to put this out so I can buy a copy? -_- Quote
sidewinder Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 (edited) I've been giving these CDs a spin in the car during the week. Thoroughly enjoyable - and as mentioned earlier it very much takes me back 20+ years to seeing this group maybe a week or two before at Scotts. What I can recall was that Woody was on incredible form during that tour. As has been previously pointed out the group was excellent too - these guys worked very much as a team. The addition of Steve Turre on trombone was the icing on the cake. I remember speaking to people in the club who had travelled over to the UK from Holland just to see the gig, such was his reputation at that time. As I recall it, he was also heavily into doing his 'Tai Chi' on the stage - not something you saw everyday in the UK during the early 1980s. Edited May 20, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
Bright Moments Posted June 4, 2005 Report Posted June 4, 2005 i finally got to listen to these. thanks tom they were EXCELLENT!!! Quote
RDK Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Listening to this again, and that Walter Davis tune, "400 Years Ago Tomorrow," is really terrific. Why in god's name hasn't that become a jazz standard? Quote

Concurrent with the grain, bummer. ← Try re-burning the disc, Jon, that might help. Otherwise I'll make you another copy, but I've got some skips on a couple of tracks myself - at least on my boombox player at work. Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Tom, I finally put this in the player tonight, after all this time! The sound is great, and the band is on fire. Thanks for sharing!!! Cary Quote
shawoody Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Any chance in sharing a copy of this date with another true Woody Shaw fan??!! Quote
RDK Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 For anyone else looking for unreleased live Woody Shaw, there's been a bunch of it lately up on www.dimeadozen.org. Quote
cannonball-addict Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Finally! I had been waiting and waiting and perusing all woody shaw sites to find this info. I played it many times on the radio without being able to tell my listeners what exactly it was and who was on it. Now I can! Yay for bootlegs and the people who document and obsess over them!!!
