MartyJazz was kind enough to provide me with some discographical info for the Woody Shaw date that I sent out as a bonus with BFT#25. FYI, I'll create the real BFT discussion threads later tonight (I'm in a bit of a rush at the moment).

I don't have anything particularly profound to say about this Woody Shaw date, other than I think it's one of THE very best performances I've ever heard from Woody -- and more generally speaking, I think the entire band is on fire (especially Mulgrew Miller). I also have a soft spot for "trumpet plus piano trio" recordings.

Hope everyone enjoys this extra Woody Shaw concert -- it's one of my all-time favorite "unreleased" live dates -- and I'd love to hear what people think of it. (And amazing as the performance is, the sound quality is pretty "top-drawer" too.)

Interesting that Steve Turre wasn't in the lineup that night. The group at Ronnie Scotts I caught those two nights (which had Turre) played many of the same numbers. 'You and The Night...', 'Katrina Ballerina' and 'Organ Grinder' bring back very fond memories.

Looking forward to this !

Give credit where it's due. DSGTrane is an absolute Woody Shaw fanatic, so I knew to go to him for the discographical data. :tup

That's why I couldn't resist including this date with my BFT. I knew it would be a pain in the ass to send out -- not one -- but TWO bonus discs. BUT, I also knew that this particular date was absolutely worth all the extra hassle, every damn bit of it.

I listened to this last night--what a show! These guys were on fire! Thanks for including it, Tom. I'll be looking into some Mulgrew Miller!

The only problem is a scratch right at the beginning of the drum solo of disc one, track two. It won't let me play it all the way through. Concurrent with the grain, bummer. :(

The cds I received have Woody Shaw written on them, but contain a live performance of Barbara Streisand.

But I understand she sings "Sweet Love of Mine" on it. :D

That is correct, and while playing the nose flute, it's really not all that bad. B-)

I may be the lucky one after all.

I've been giving these CDs a spin in the car during the week. Thoroughly enjoyable - and as mentioned earlier it very much takes me back 20+ years to seeing this group maybe a week or two before at Scotts. What I can recall was that Woody was on incredible form during that tour. As has been previously pointed out the group was excellent too - these guys worked very much as a team. The addition of Steve Turre on trombone was the icing on the cake.

I remember speaking to people in the club who had travelled over to the UK from Holland just to see the gig, such was his reputation at that time. As I recall it, he was also heavily into doing his 'Tai Chi' on the stage - not something you saw everyday in the UK during the early 1980s.

Listening to this again, and that Walter Davis tune, "400 Years Ago Tomorrow," is really terrific. Why in god's name hasn't that become a jazz standard? :tup

Try re-burning the disc, Jon, that might help. Otherwise I'll make you another copy, but I've got some skips on a couple of tracks myself - at least on my boombox player at work.

Finally! I had been waiting and waiting and perusing all woody shaw sites to find this info. I played it many times on the radio without being able to tell my listeners what exactly it was and who was on it. Now I can! Yay for bootlegs and the people who document and obsess over them!!!
