The recent Mosaic/Universal deal had each outfit selling some sets.

But puttiing out the exact same material, a month apart (Mosaic's box is due in April) does not make any sense (from a marketing point), does it?

Nor mine, but I can't believe that Mosaic would license material that is about to be released by the licensee. Conversely, I find it difficult to believe that Verve would give Mosaic a license to issue something they are about to reissue themselves.

Deduction: We must be talking about the Mosaic set. B-)

you didn't mention this one that I'm looking forward to:

Sammy Davis Jr. and Carmen McRae - Boy Meets Girl: The Complete Sammy Davis Jr. and Carmen McRae on Decca - Reissue - Verve Records

Still nothing about Basie on the Mosaic site. It's not unusual for companies to share sales in different spheres (sometimes U.S. sales v. International, for example) so some sharing here wouldn't be that atypical.

That's exactly what happened with the Tal Farlow set, which is why you can get the identical set--except that the spine of the outer box doesn't say "Mosaic" and has a different number--in the US for less than half what Mosaic is charging.

For me, it's not that it sucks. It's awful damned funny. But it is less "interesting" than the Impulses and (partly because) it has been out on cd a few times (or at least once, from Japan).

Lookie here, everybody, just in my mailbox:

UPCOMING RELEASE

The Complete Clef/Verve Count Basie Fifties Studio Recordings

When Basie reformed his big band in the 1950s, he managed to become entirely new by sticking with what had made him great from the start. And in the process, Basie achieved some of the most extraordinary success of his career.

He employed the era's best composers and arrangers, and they left their mark not only on the orchestra but on musical history as well. A new breed of soloists became stand-outs in what was known as "The New Testament" band. Names such as Joe Newman, Paul Quinichette, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Joe Wilder, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, and Sonny Payne became known during their tenure with Basie. Another name that became a household word thanks to his association with Count Basie is the inimitable Joe Williams.

The original reel to reel tapes were the source for most of this release which contains 146 tracks on eight CDs, including seven previously-unreleased recordings and three alternates not in the vaults at Universal Music.

This set is scheduled for release in mid-late April and is posted on the website and available for preorder.

#229- 8 CDs - $136.00

1984 is available as download I believe. Anyhow, let's just hope the release of Psychisemotus is just the start and that they will eventually release them all.
