kh1958 Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 That's quite an interesting database. Were all of these performances actually recorded? Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 I haven't watched things like the Underdog video lately - has any of this Montreux material been seen before in excerpts? The steady mining of the Montreux archives is a wonderful thing. Looking forward to more. Mike Quote

The only bootlegs of the Mingus Moves/Changes group I've heard have been of very poor quality. Quote
Swinger Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 kh1958: Let me guess..you are going to buy this one, right? Quote
kh1958 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 kh1958: Let me guess..you are going to buy this one, right? Yes indeed. Mingus has been an automatic purchase for me in all instances since I first heard Mingus Moves in 1974. Quote
John B Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 For just over $10 I couldn't resist preordering this one. Quote
Swinger Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I'm going to order this one as well.Mingus is the one who got me into jazz several years ago and I try to purchase as many of his albums as possible. Quote
bertrand Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Any reviews? How about the Miles Isle Of Wight? The Mingus is on sale at Tower for $10 and I have a $5 coupon for the Miles. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Got it in the mail yesterday but haven't seen it. I will watch it tonight. Quote
John B Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 I saw this dvd this past weekend and was very impressed. It has the same rough quality of Kirk's Montreux session, and, somewhat distractingly at first, Walrath closely resembles Gabe Kaplan in Welcome Back Kotter, but the music is top-notch and I was thrilled to be able to see this group live, something I never would have been able to do in person. Given how inexpensive this dvd is I highly recommend grabbing a copy. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 This is a great group, and the release of this DVD is a major event for Mingus fans. The Changes quintet plays The Devil Blues, Free Cell Block F, and an epic Sue's Changes. Then guests Benny Bailey and Gerry Mulligan are featured (with Pullen and Mingus) on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Take the A Trane. The sound is generally good, except that George Adams is somewhat erratically recorded. Quote

Given how inexpensive this dvd is I highly recommend grabbing a copy. I was fortunate to see this group several times in the early -mid '70s at the Village Vanguard. It was a great, if somewhat unheralded, Mingus ensemble - certainly his best group post '65. Don Pullen was a tremendous performer who really thrived within the Mingus musical framework. Quote
Claude Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 (edited) I received the DVD today and I'm currently into the second track. The sound (stereo) is good, apart from a couple of sound balancing problems. The picture quality is excellent. The camerawork focuses (too much) on close-ups, but there is a lot of variation in the camera angles. The 70's clothing of the musicians is awful On the back of the DVD case, it says "Eagle is making these (Montreux) concerts available for the first time", so there should be more releases ahead. A reproduction of the 1975 festival poster in the booklet shows the names of Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Andrew Hill, Bill Evans, Rahsaan Roland Kirk as well as mainstream and non-jazz stuff. Highly recommended (based on the first 20 minutes), especially as it is the only Mingus concert on DVD. Edited November 22, 2004 by Claude Quote

Actually, I believe that there are several more discs released with the Mingus disc; but the only jazz one is Al Dimeola. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Yes, Adams goes off mic a little too often, and it sure is creepy to see his eyes roll back in his head so often. . . . Great dvd however! Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 This is a great dvd -- recommended for Mingus nuts and all jazz fans! The video quality is pretty damn good for its time. Quote
theteach Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 Wow, just watched this today after receiving it for x-mas. Sue's changes is simply amazing as Pullen's 'locked hands' and Walrath's solos are amazing. George Adams didn't blow me away; I sorta wished Rahsaan Roland Kirk was there to show him up. On Take the A train, Mulligan's play with Mingus is exceptional! Highly recommended! Lou Quote
