Sweet Love, Bitter !!

One of the recent releases on Rhapsody Films, produced and directed by Herbert Danska in 1967 and starring Dick Gregory. Notable for a very fine soundtrack by Mal Waldron and with a story line loosely based on the last years of Charlie Parker.

Charles McPherson 'ghosts' for Gregory in the soundtrack - the band is absolutely top notch with Dave Burns, George Coleman, Mal Waldron, George Duvivier/Richard Davis and Al Drears (?). The film superbly depicts the NYC of the period, the scuffle of the jazz life and the pit-falls in a sort of 'film noir' style. Very cool indeed ! B-)

My understanding is that after initial release in the 60s the film was subsequently shelved and has been an 'underground' item ever since. I have the sneeking suspicion that I might have sen it at a rare jazz films festival put together by the National Film Theatre in the late 70s but I'm not sure. It looks sort-of familiar ! :)
