The Jazz Oc magazine that is being published in southern France is releasing this week a CD of various sides recorded between 1977 and 1979 at concerts in southern France by Barney Wilen and the Jazz Hip Trio.

The CD is entitled 'Le Jardin Aux Sentiers Qui Bifurquent'.

Playing with Barney Wilen (who is on tenor and soprano saxophone) are Jean-Bernard Eisinger on piano, Roger Luccioni on bass and Daniel Humair on drums. Violonist Didier Lockwood joins in on one track (Le Tableau de Daniel Humair).

Tracks listing:

- Lonely Woman,

- Daniel et les Lions,

- Le Jardin aux Sentiers Qui Bifurquent,

- Tableau de Daniel Humair,

- The Night We Called It a Day,

- Balamba

Tracks length: 59m38s.

The late '70s is a practically undocumented period of Wilen who stayed outside of the jazz scene except for several concert appearances.

This a fully authorized and very legal private release. First run is 1,000 copies.

Cost is €15 (plus €1.90 shipment within the EU, more outside the EU).

I called the phone number listed here and all I get is an answering machine. Yesterday, I also sent an E-mail for info and I've yet to get a reply. Is this legit? Can I call and order it directly?

If not, can someone get me a copy? I most definitely want this.

Later,

Kevin

I have mailed them, just before my post, above, and have not heard anything, either!

Everybody just relax. The phone number I listed is not really a business, it is the office of the magazine Jazz Oc. It happens there are jazz festivals going on in southern France right now. The man in charge Jean-Luc Arvieux is away from the office most of the time this week having a good jazz time at one of the festival.

He will be back in the office from next Monday on. That's when shipments will be starting on the Wilen.

By the way the CD release is volume 1. There will be more. Arvieux cannot say how many at this stage. He added there will be a DVD since many of these Wilen concerts were filmed.

Thanks, brownie! And good news that there is even more to come!

I received an E-mail from Jean Luc Arvieu with the ordering info but I am a bit hesitant. He wants me to include my full credit card info in an E-mail. I am not so sure that an E-mail is all that safe from crooks. Anyone else agree? I would prefer to call a phone number or at least place the order through an encrypted web site.

not certain of the security of trying to break the info into two or three subsequent mails but that is what i have done with DMG in NYC.

On sending credit card info by email:

This is not recommended because emails travel unencrypted over many servers, and somebody with access to a server could run a software scanning all mails for credit card info. But a fraud can also happen in any shop or restaurent where the credit card is used, so one should not overestimate this risk.

If a secure website is not available, it is common practice to communicate credit card numbers by fax, telephone or to send the number divided into 3 or 4 emails.

I pretty much agree, but I did it anyway.

The cd is very nice. To say it is a "little bright" may be an understatement: when the violinist is performing it can be "piercing" but overall the sound is good, and great performances!

Sound indeed isn't perfect, but the music is very nice!

Wilen is pretty much in a Coltrane mood, generally, no?

About the credit card info: would you recommend to split up the number itself into several mails? I sent the number in one mail, and the cardholder and expiry info in another. Would have been better to break up the card-no. into two or three mails?

Or even sending it from different mail addresses?

I never did that before, and I did have a bit of a bad feeling.
