Leeway
The Dexter Gordon Prestige Box Set is now out. Has anyone had a chance to check it out? Have there been any reviews of it? Dexter Gordon 11 CD Box Set

alankin
Do the cds come w/original covers? The booklet has a page with small color reproductions of sixteen covers.
Leeway
What about the sound? Are they using the old masterings or are these newly remastered? None of the reviews make reference to this.
Brad
I want to order this but something tells me 11 cds are a lot. I'll probably get it but something is holding me back and it's not necessaryily the dough.

A. Kingstone
Just ordered this baby. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. The All Music Guide review says the remastering is first rate.
jazzbo
And Kirk Felton has been doing a wonderful job of remastering.
MartyJazz
Interesting that this 11 CD box set lists for $140 ($12.73 per disc) while the recently issued Miles Davis "Seven Steps" 7 CD box set lists for $130 ($18.57 per disc). I wonder where is the logic, or perhaps the word is "greed" when it comes to Sony Columbia.
JSngry
Sony/Columbia offers much more elaborate documentation/packaging/etc. and probably deeper research and more "fastidious" remastering. That all costs money. I've been sent a review copy of this set and will be doing a "formal" review for Bagatellen, at the request of Joe Milazzo. But I can say here and now that this Prestige box offers good value and decent documentation. Not sure that the casual Dexter fan might not be better served, at least in the short-term, by getting individual albums, but that's debateable. I'm going to plead ignorance here but I'm not familiar with Bagatellen. Does it just cover jazz and (does it cover all kinds of jazz) and how do I subscribe? JSngry
It's a website. Not that familiar with it myself, but Joe's a good friend and a righteous kinda guy, so when he asked me to do it, I was more than happy to assent. BFrank
Kevin Whitehead reviews his favorite box sets from this year on NPR's Fresh Air. This is one of them, but it's worth listening to the whole thing. It's pretty interesting. Check it out HERE

clandy44
My legal advice to Jim is to not give it away. A very thoughtful, knowledgeable, lucid review-why post here when you can charge us for your posts? I have the box and am glad I do because I will always be a Dexter fan and do not want to pay double for it when it goes OOP. I am not a musician and some of Jim's comments and insights are well beyond me or my ears, but I can vouch for a lot of good music in this box. gslade
Nice review Jim was going to purchase this next week but-- I picked up the Art Hodes mosaic on ebay instead Dexter will have to wait
JSngry
Thanks for the kind words. Not to appear obsessive or anything, but I did some fixing/rewriting of some portions of the review, and think it's now better. Thanks to Joe Milazzo for facilitating a second chance. It's still here: http://www.bagatellen.com/archives/reviews/000887.html and that, as they say, is that.

jazzbo
I don't want to read the review. I know what would happen. I'd get the FEVER to buy the damned set!
