Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 (edited) I just got this in the e-mail from you-know-who... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mosaic Records" Sent: Wednesday, May 12, 2004 7:54 AM Subject: Re: Mosaic FeedBack regarding General Comments. Tom, Andrew did warm to the idea and we will be doing that [select] set some time next year. All the best, Michael ----- Original Message ----- To: "Mosaic Records" Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2004 10:10 AM Subject: Re: Mosaic FeedBack regarding General Comments. Greetings Michael, I've heard through the grapevine that "Dance With Death" is slated to be a Conn this fall. Great news and all, but I couldn't help but wonder about the status of that Andrew Hill "Select" that you had mentioned before, with all of the previously unreleased BN 60's sessions?? Did Andrew warm to the idea any?? I'm almost afraid to ask about it, because my hunch is that he won't go for it. But who knows - stranger things have happened, I suppose. Best regards, -- Tom in K.C. That's something like 2 or 3 hours of previously unreleased BN Andrew Hill sessions!! EDIT: By the way, that means (along with the "Dance With Death" Conn this fall), that every single Andrew Hill BN session will have finally made it to CD, including what is a TON more previously unreleased sessions. ==================================================== EDIT #2: Here is the sessionography for what should be on the Andrew Hill "Mosaic Select": Wow!!! Two sessions with Sam Rivers, and one with Woody Shaw. Also, four extra tunes with Charles Tolliver. And Andrew plays organ(!) on 5 tunes. (Also, I've color-coded a few things, and added some bold to a few names, to point out what I thought was interesting.) Unless otherwise specifically stated as having been released on the "One For One" double-LP, ALL of this material is previously unreleased in any format. ==================== ==================== Session #1: February 10th, 1967 Robin Kenyatta (as) Sam Rivers (fl-1, ss-2, ts-3) Andrew Hill (p-4, org-5) Cecil McBee (ba) Teddy Robinson (dm) Nadi Qumar (thumb p-6, African dm-7, perc-8) 1. relyles Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Definately good news. Let's only hope that no misfortune alters the plan. Quote
sal Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 That's fantastic news! Thanks for sharing, Rooster. Quote
DrJ Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Awesome! Thanks for plugging this idea to Michael, Tom - and Mosaic rocks! Quote
JSngry Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I don't expect them all to be good. I expect some, maybe even most, to be problematic in one way or another. BUT I DON'T CARE! This is a "silent period" of a major artist, a period that has long had me curious (notably re:Leonard Feather's assertation in the ONE FOR ONE liner notes that this was a "difficult" time for Hill, whatever that may or may not mean...) and the historical importance of these sessions will outweigh any such matters. Stefan Wood Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Who cares if it is problematic? If it is anything like the Connoisseur release, this should be great! Quote
Eric Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Way to go Rooster ... and Michael ... and Andrew!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 By the way, from a previous e-mail exchange I had with Michael back in January, he said this about the unreleased Andrew Hill material... I am talking to Andrew about gathering the rest of the unissued sessions into a Mosaic Select set at some point. They are uneven, but all have their moments. And if I do that Andrew box, I would include the full sextet and strings sessions from ONE FOR ONE, which probably means I wouldn't have room for DANCE WITH DEATH which has been fully issued anyway. Michael [And we now know that "Dance With Death" will be a Conn this Fall.] Meaning that there's previously unreleased material from both of those two late 60's "One For One" sessions (beyond what has been released from them, on LP). So, that's a little more Charles Tolliver too!! Quote
relyles Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I am also glad to hear that Dance With Death will finally be reissued on CD. I have the LP and it is definately an underrated gem in Hill's discography. Quote
