Bluerein
Were those Indigos alternates issued in any form in the past? If not they must have had access to the tapes (unbeliveable).
Chuck Nessa
Were those Indigos alternates issued in any form in the past? If not they must have had access to the tapes (unbeliveable). Some of the takes used for the mono master were different. Been out before.
Swinging Swede
Were those Indigos alternates issued in any form in the past? If not they must have had access to the tapes (unbeliveable). Nothing is previously unissued. However, looking closer at this release discographically reveals that if the Andorrans intended it to be the original album followed by bonus tracks, they messed it up, since tracks 1-10 actually mirror the 1989 CD, which differed from the original LP. The 1989 CD omitted one track,The Sky Fell Down, which only was on the mono version of the LP, and added two: Night And Day and All The Things You Are. The track order is different too. Here’s what was on the original LP: 1 Solitude 2 Where Or When 3 Mood Indigo 4 Autumn Leaves 5 The Sky Fell Down (only on mono LP; absent from stereo LP) 6 Prelude To A Kiss 7 Willow Weep For Me 8 Tenderly 9 Dancing in the Dark And here’s what’s on the Jazz Beat CD. Assuming that tracks 1-10 are the same versions as on the 1989 CD (the track order and timings match), I’ve added some info on where the tracks were available previously. 1 Solitude [on original LP and on 1989 CD] 2 Where Or When [on original LP and on 1989 CD] 3 Mood Indigo (stereo take) [on original stereo LP and on 1989 CD] 4 Night And Day [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653) and on 1989 CD] 5 Prelude To A Kiss [on original LP and on 1989 CD] 6 All The Things You Are [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653) and on 1989 CD] 7 Willow Weep For Me (stereo take) [on original stereo LP and on 1989 CD] 8 Tenderly [on original LP and on 1989 CD] 9 Dancing In The Dark [on original LP and on 1989 CD] 10 Autumn Leaves [an edited version was on original LP and this full performance on the 1989 CD] 11 The Sky Fell Down [on original mono LP only] 12 Commercial Time [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653)] 13 Mood Indigo (mono take) [on original mono LP] 14 Mood Indigo (alternate take) [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653)] 15 Autumn Leaves (alternate version from earlier date) [was on the CD ”Duke Ellington & His Great Vocalists”] 16 Willow Weep For Me (mono take) [on original mono LP] 17 Where Or When (alternate take) [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653)] 18 All The Things You Are (alternate take) [on French LP set ”Duke 56/62, Vol. 1” (CBS 88653)] 19 Love (My Heart, My Mind, My Everything) [on Columbia single 41098, and also on the CD ”Duke Ellington & His Great Vocalists”] It’s quite complicated, and it’s possible that I’ve guessed wrong on some version. For example, it’s possible that track 15 is the LP version with Ozzie Bailey's first vocal chorus in French edited out. The track is one minute shorter. 13 and 14 may of course very well be reversed. jazzbo
A Mosaic release is "not planned." (I'd rather have the originally planned two cd expanded version from Columbia, which is also not planned). which is fucking asinine, bc the work-- or by far the bulk of it (by Schaap)-- is DONE. edc heard it on WKCR. i don't expect anything from Sony/BMG but this is pretty short sighted of Mosaic i think, & it might goose the pretty bleh Mosaic singles series... which is fine but precious little that wasn't easily available if ya'll really wanted it (edc once did). FREE A DRUM IS A WOMAN!!! (while there's still some goddamn wampum to be made from it, i.e. not an inferior Andorran issue w/o expando anything.) The Andorran copy is already out. Madame Zzaj has gotten to Europe.
bluesbro
I ordered the A Drum is a Woman and the Suites from amazon.fr The 'Drum Is a Woman' CD is out now. It is a straight reissue of the previous 'Jazz Originals' series. Strangely, it's not available through amazon anymore, except for 1 copy at the amazon.fr marketplace. Not available at cduniverse, worldsrecords or any other of my usual online sellers. OK, now I found it at FNAC.fr What kind of distribution is this? Dusty Groove has the Ellington's back in stock.
