I couldn't remember, so I looked back through the receipts (which I have left in the boxes, along with the catalog they sent with each order, and any other paperwork and brochures they included).

Don Cherry - back in 1994.

Well the first one I purchased directly from Mosaic was the Phil Woods set. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I first got hooked on Mosaic through some loose partial sets that I found very cheaply in the used bins. But they were enough to get that monkey onto my back...

The Duke Ellington was the first I purchased directly from Mosaic. At present I have in one format or another every set from the Blue Note Monk to Roy Eldridge including(groan) Bobby Hackett and Four Freshmen.

I ordered the Sam Rivers, Curtis Fuller and Blue Mitchell sets all at the same time, if I remember correctly. Or maybe it was Rivers/Fuller/Mobley. I can't remember now.

Lee Morgan, right off the last chance list, whenever that was. I sent for the brochure when I saw a review of the Anita O'Day box in JazzTimes, but the Lee was about to disappear, so...

Anita was second, though!

Nat King Cole set at Tower Records. Once you've gotten over the hump of paying over $250 for a box set, it's a lot easier to bite the bullet on those smaller sets, like the Capitol Jazz sessions and the Commodores.

mosaic sets are really expensive here, 30USD no matter what they are OOP or not and very hard-to-find too

one day the Jimmy Smith set on perfect condition was available for 11USD per disc.

Following a review of a Sun Ra album that compared his piano style to Nichols I bought Herbie Nichols in summer 1992. My first order from overseas, was I excited or what !!!

My first shipment from Mosaic (back in 1986) had the Herbie Nichols, the Albert Ammons/Mead Lux Lewis and the Art Pepper sets. This was a BIG box. All LPs ($9 a disc, no Mosaic CD back then). Mosaic had just moved to its current Stamford location. The sets came with brochure no. 5 which reproduced a Chicago Tribune article on the company by Larry Kart.
