Soulstation1 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 (edited) Hank Mobley in Jan. 2000 with christmas cash via the Jazz Times review of the set ss1 Edited February 26, 2004 by Soulstation1 Quote
sal Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 JJ Johnson. And still my favorite. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I couldn't remember, so I looked back through the receipts (which I have left in the boxes, along with the catalog they sent with each order, and any other paperwork and brochures they included). Don Cherry - back in 1994. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Larry Young (early '95) followed later that year by Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw Quote
RDK Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Well the first one I purchased directly from Mosaic was the Phil Woods set. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I first got hooked on Mosaic through some loose partial sets that I found very cheaply in the used bins. But they were enough to get that monkey onto my back... Quote
Eric Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 yep Monk Blue Note got it for Christmas 1984 or 1985 (read some ad in downbeat) Eric Quote
Out2Lunch Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 The Duke Ellington was the first I purchased directly from Mosaic. At present I have in one format or another every set from the Blue Note Monk to Roy Eldridge including(groan) Bobby Hackett and Four Freshmen. Quote
vibes Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I ordered the Sam Rivers, Curtis Fuller and Blue Mitchell sets all at the same time, if I remember correctly. Or maybe it was Rivers/Fuller/Mobley. I can't remember now. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 out2lunch i thought you owned every set in both lp AND cd versions. ss1 Quote
alejo Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Andrew Hill followed by the Sam Rivers and Woody Shaw sets. Still my three favorites! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Lee Morgan, right off the last chance list, whenever that was. I sent for the brochure when I saw a review of the Anita O'Day box in JazzTimes, but the Lee was about to disappear, so... Anita was second, though! Quote
Michel_M Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Thad Jones Blue Note/UA/Roulette and Curtis Fuller a few years ago. Still in my favorites Mosaic boxes for musical and ... sentimental reasons Quote
street singer Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Grachan Moncur III Select late last year. My first "full-blown" Mosaic? Hank Mobley. Received from my girlfriend for Chrismas last year. Yeah, I'm a newbie..... My life will never be the same! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Art Blakey 1960 set. It opened me up to financial ruin. . . . Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Andrew Hill in the summer of 1995... and what a glorious summer it was! Quote
billyboy Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Nat King Cole set at Tower Records. Once you've gotten over the hump of paying over $250 for a box set, it's a lot easier to bite the bullet on those smaller sets, like the Capitol Jazz sessions and the Commodores. Quote
marcoliv Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 mosaic sets are really expensive here, 30USD no matter what they are OOP or not and very hard-to-find too one day the Jimmy Smith set on perfect condition was available for 11USD per disc. a glorious day of course!!! Saint Vitus Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Basie Live in 1998 was the first purchase ... A huge number of prev. unreleased tracks made it a no-brainer. Quote
Clunky Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Following a review of a Sun Ra album that compared his piano style to Nichols I bought Herbie Nichols in summer 1992. My first order from overseas, was I excited or what !!! Quote
desertblues Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 For me the addiction began years ago with the T Bone Walker lp set, bought for $40 at my favorite used record store. At the time I was mostly into blues - almost 30 Mosaic sets later it's mostly jazz... Quote
brownie Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 My first shipment from Mosaic (back in 1986) had the Herbie Nichols, the Albert Ammons/Mead Lux Lewis and the Art Pepper sets. This was a BIG box. All LPs ($9 a disc, no Mosaic CD back then). Mosaic had just moved to its current Stamford location. The sets came with brochure no. 5 which reproduced a Chicago Tribune article on the company by Larry Kart. Quote
Gordokae Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Art Pepper & the two Chet sets. . . . all three as LPs. . . . . .way back in the very early eighties. Gordon Quote
undergroundagent Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 My first Mosaic purchase was the Tina Brooks. Quote
