A warning to all german fans of the movie: The recent DVD release of the movie in the cheap SZ-Mediathek Edition - the first german release on DVD - has the wrong aspect ratio: 1:85/1 instead of 1:66/1. In the close-up shots of Jeanne Moreau's face, her head is cut off in the middle of the forehead.

So the only acceptable options remain the french DVD or the Criterion, which are 2-3 times the price of the SZ-MediathekDVD and have no german sound.

Having long been a fan of Miles' soundtrack, I've been curious to see the film with the music in context.

I bought the Criterion version- it's a two disc set which contains extras including interviews with the director, actors and sesssion pianist Rene Urtreger, footage of Miles and Louis Malle from the soundtrack recording session, a new video about the score w/Gary Giddins and Jon Faddis and a student film by Malle called Crazeology, featuring the Parker tune.

I just got it, haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but it looks pretty good. :)

Bertrand.

P.S.

Shrdlu,

Comment as-tu fais pour mettre les accents?

Miles et Jeanne? NON! Oui pour le reste!

Pour Jeanne, c'était Malle, pas Miles!

I don't hold 'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud' as a masterpiece but it is a very interesting thriller.

It's also a nostalgia trip for people who were still growing up around the time it was filmed.

Et Jeanne Moreau était superbe

Deux liasons pour Miles? Naughty boy!

Les accents sont inclus avec Windows. Voir Control Panel --> "Regional and Language Options" --> "Languages" --> Details". (Possiblement en français pour toi.) J'ai les accents etc. pour français, allemand et espagnol. Pas de problème!

Don't know why the footage of Miles Davis recording the soundtrack was not included in that collector's edition DVD. I understand it was included in the US version.

This is the footage.

This was originally a sequence from the French TV show Ciné-Panorama. The interviewer with Louis Malle is Ciné-Panorama producer François Chalais.

The December 2007 issue of Jazz Magazine celebrates the 50th anniversary of the recording of the soundtrack of 'Ascenseur Pour l'Echafaud'.

All in French.

It includes articles/interviews on Jeanne de Mirbeck, René Urtreger's sister, who recalls her involvement with Miles. She was Miles' French girlfriend for several years.

René Urtreger also has fascinating recollections about the recording session and his tour wit Miles Davis.

Good article also on impresario/record producer Marcel Romano who died last August. Plus other interviews.
