JSngry Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Dr. Lonnie Smith shows up on this new live date by this Canadian band as featured/guest artist, and if he steals the show, it ain't by all THAT much. I'd never heard/heard of Crash before, but they seem like they got it going on pretty nicely, particularly altoist Cory Weeds & drummer Bernie Arai. No wimpiness or by-the-numbers redundancy here. Nothing radically new either, but BFD when the grooves are true, and here they are. Everybody came to play, and play they do! The Doctor is in EXCELLENT form, and the album includes a few of his raps w/the audience. Good vibes, good grooves, and, yes, good greeeeazzzze. Crash web site, w/a link to purchase: http://crashisfunky.com/ Recommended - a very low profile release that'll do you right more than will most of the name brands. Carpe diem! Quote
Joe G Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Looks cool! They're doing a bunch of shows with Lonnie, but they're all up in patricia's neck-o-the-woods. Quote
JSngry Posted May 28, 2004 Author Report Posted May 28, 2004 Yeah, Crash seems to be Smith's band of choice for performances in that area. He probably comes out ahead being their guest rather than bringing his own band. Not a bad choice at all, really. It's a good fit, based on this evidence. Lonnie in particular just GOES for it (wonder if playing w/a bass player opens him up in any way?) The chemistry is good, and everybody plays enough outside of the box to keep it fresh AND funky. Guess that makes if funky fresh! Quote
chris olivarez Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 Sounds like something worth checking out. Quote
Shawn Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 Well a "Thumbs Up" from the Sangrinator is enough for me!!! I'll be checking this one out! Quote
doubleM Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 Cory Weeds owns the Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, B.C.. He's a helluva dude, but I've never heard him play. Thankfully, those guys are coming to town in a couple of weeks. I'm SO there! Quote
ciccio Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Thanks for all the positive feedback. The tour with Dr. Lonnie has been fabulous so far. Different every night and he really inspires the band which is great. We did a clinic for K - to grade 3 kids that was amazing and then 4 sold out shows here in Vancouver and what a response.......we head out tomorrow to Victoria, Kelowna, Nelson, Calgary and Edmonton....there has been talk of a return to the Blue Monk in January as well as some other stops in California. Please check out www.crashisfunky.com for more tour information. Thanks. Quote
doubleM Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Hey Ciccio, are you Cory W., or one of the other guys? I ate dinner w/ you guys that Saturday. You funked up the Bluemonk! I hope you come back soon. Cheers, Matt Quote
Joe G Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 I guessed Cory, simply because we had a recent email exchange in which I invited him to post here. It could be one of the other bandmembers, I admit. Quote
doubleM Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 I guessed Cory, too. Your post (Joe G.) came up as I was typing mine. I couldn't remember a couple of the other Crash guys' handles. Quote
doubleM Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I'm listening to it right now..."Mama's Got a Complex"...... Quote
Joe G Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I have to wait a little longer; my cd came defective and all but unlistenable. That's why I emailed Cory. He got right back to me to say he'd send another out ASAP. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 "Your momma's got a complex... She thinks she's hot but hot she's not..." He played that live last year at the Ford Detroit Jazz Festival. Quote
