JSngry Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 A friend turned me on to this live trio date w/Kenny Barron & Ron Carter, with 6 standards, and an original apiece by Carter & Barron on London's Blow It Hard label. All accoustic, swinging, no-b.s. straight-ahead piano jazz of a very high quality. Barron in particular sounds freakin' GREAT, playing with a near-ferocious animation and imagination that some of his more recent studio work has lacked. Carter is Carter, but not irritatingly so. But the real surprise is Cobham. I've not heard him in a "pure" jazz context since his days w/Horace Silver (and the odd CTI date), and he sounds just marvelous. No flashy pyrotechnics, just good, at times Roy Haynes-ish JAZZ playing. This would be ultimate Blindfold Test Stumper material. Quite an unexpected pleasure, this one was! Info from Blow It Hard REAL AUDIO samples Don't know how hard this one is to find, but for fans of Barron, I'd think it would be worth making any and all extra efforts, as it would for fans of high-quality piano trio jazz in general. This one REALLY caught me off guard! Quote
king ubu Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 (edited) Is it this one, Jim? I raved about this in the early days of this board, or over at AAJ. Great record! Uh, I guess it's not the same, as the above one has 8 tunes. Look for it, too, if you can find it! The label is In+Out/In-Akustik. 1. Stella By Starlight [10:43] 2. Autumn Leaves [10:00] 3. new Waltz [06:55] 4. Bouncing With Bud [07:02] 5. 'Round Midnight [07:56] 6. And Then Again [11:25] 7. I Thought About You [10:26] 8. Someday My Prince Will Come [09:20] There is another one I have seen in stores recently, a japanese release it seems I haven't heard it: Cobham is really playing great on the one I have! Very subtle, very swinging. A perfect master! ubu Edited February 13, 2004 by king ubu Quote

Someday My Prince Will Come [09:20] Yes, this is the one to which I refer. I admit to a bit of skepticism before listening, not because of a doubting of Cobham's skills, which are beyond dispute, but just because I figured he'd be "overcompensating", if you know what I mean. But I was wrong - the cat plays totally inside the music, with taste and sensitivity, and like I said, Barron is HOT! What's the one on In+Out/In-Akustik? Quote
king ubu Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 Jim, this IS the one on In+Out. At least here it is. The other I have no idea what label it's on, found the image via google search. Also I haven't heard it. "Art of Three" is easily one of my favorite mainstream trio records of the last years! ubu Quote
randyhersom Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 Would you say that the strings on McCoy Tyner's Fly With the Wind exclude it from being a pure jazz context, or are you unfamiliar with that one Jim? I like the album, and like Cobham's playing on it. I am aware that some people consider it "lesser" McCoy. Quote
JSngry Posted February 13, 2004 Author Report Posted February 13, 2004 I'd forgotten all about that one, Randy! It's fine with me. Another one that shows Cobham in a "pure" jazz context to good advantage is Ron Carter's ALL BLUES on CTI, w/Joe Henderson & Roland Hanna (Richard tee on one cut). A really mellow album. Quote
