Rooster_Ties Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Out of nowhere this morning, I just got an ultra-polite e-mail from someone asking me to de-link my Avatar from the online version of the image, because it was hurting their bandwidth. Thought I'd share it here, since I hadn't realized that linking Avatars might drive up bandwidth use at a considerably larger rate than linking images in threads might (unless we're talking about the "babe" thread). Anyway, here's the message -- just cuz this guy didn't have to be so damn nice about asking me to de-link the thing, and without me even asking - he said he was happy to let me use the image. Rooster_Ties, [username delete] has sent you this email from http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php. Rooster, I am delighted you are using the picture of Merchants Bank in Grinnell as your avatar. It's a great design, and I am glad the photo came out as well as it did. May I ask a favor? Would you be able to copy the picture (you have my permission) and use it directly, rather than link to our business site? The hits use up a lot of office bandwidth, and the powers that be may require me to take it down if that continues. If it would be helpful, I can also email it to you directly. Dan Gould Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I thought all avatars were uploaded images, I didn't realize you could link them instead. I think its only reasonable to upload avatars to Organissimo rather than linking from somewhere else. Next time the response may be more like the Babe Didrickeson message than this guy. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 29, 2004 Author Report Posted April 29, 2004 Next time the response may be more like the Babe Didrickeson message than this guy. Frankly, most responses are likely to be more like the Babe Didrickeson message. In the past I've always linked everything, whenever I could -- Avatars, and images in threads -- just cuz I figured it would save storage space on our board. But in the case of Avatars, or images in REALLY popular threads, I may go the "attachment" route sometimes, especially if I'm getting the image from some place other than the AMG, or some online retailer with bandwidth to burn. Still shocked at how nice that e-mail was that I got. Quote
BruceH Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I thought all avatars were uploaded images, I didn't realize you could link them instead. Me too. Ya learn something every day. That was one of the most reasonably worded requests I've ever read. BTW, I also think it's a nice image. Grinnell, eh? There's also some nice architecture in Sioux City. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 29, 2004 Author Report Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) That was one of the most reasonably worded requests I've ever read. BTW, I also think it's a nice image. Grinnell, eh? There's also some nice architecture in Sioux City. Funny you would mention Sioux City. Here was my response to the message in the first post up above... Greetings Mr. xxxxxx, I'm very glad to de-link my Avatar to the online instance of your Merchants Bank image. Also, let me say how much I appreciate your kind offer to let me use the image, in what is clearly a non-commercial use (and probably a temporary one, at that). By the way, my compliments to the photographer (perhaps yourself?) - who did an outstanding job capturing the beauty of Sullivan's great design. I live in Kansas City, but I have had the chance to see the Merchants Bank, firsthand, on at least two occasions. In fact, you might be interested to know that on vacation several years ago, my family drove about 75 miles out of our way, just to see the Merchants Bank in person (along with a few lesser sites along the way). Also, I might add, it was well worth the extra time that was added to our trip. Best regards, Rooster_Ties Kansas City, MO PS: If you're ever in Sioux City, IA -- you might be interested to see the Woodbury County Courthouse, in downtown Sioux City, which was executed brilliantly in the Prairie style. Often overlooked, it is probably one of the most significant such works in all of Iowa, or frankly, in the entire United States. I've included a picture of it, as an attachment to this e-mail. Cheers!! Edited April 29, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
BruceH Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 When my wife and I were driving cross-country years ago, we stopped off in Sioux City mainly just to wander around in the Woodbury County Courthouse. Though that's the main thing I had in mind when I mentioned Sioux City, it's not the only gem; there's also a remarkable streamline Art Deco civic auditorium. That was a very nice reply, Rooster, thanks for letting us see it! Quote
