tranemonk Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 A while back I had a $100 Mosaic gift card and solicited your opinions about what should get with the cash... After mucho convincing I ended up with the Andrew Hill set (Not a good choice)... and the Gerald Wilson set.... (and thanks to Ron's eyes the European version of the Tal Farlow for another $50)... Just finished listening to the Wilson set and I would agree with most of you... there's some great music on this set... Some swinging arrangements and individual playing. Overally I give this a B+... Disc 3's cover of "Watermelon Man" is excellent.... The only blips on the radar screen were mainly in Disc 5 (the final disc). The pop tune covers some were okay, some were mediocre and there's a vocal track on Disc 5 that just did not work for me... I also didn't particularly like the organ pieces (but that's a minor complaint)... Overall a very swinging set... I would heartily recommend... so thanks.. Quote
tranemonk Posted March 20, 2005 Author Report Posted March 20, 2005 But where's the Farlow set??? they claim they've sent me the replacement set.... Their website says it shipped so hopefully I'll recieve it next week.... Quote

Be sure and post a review of that set once you've listened to it. I've now got my sights set on the Joe Pass and Johnny Smith Mosaic sets (among others). Quote
Brad Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Joe Pass is an ok set, not one of my faves. Johnny Smith I'd take a pass on myself. I picked up Moonlight in Vermont that was put out last year and as a one disc affair, it's ok. But to have a Mosaic of that would be way too much. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 All this talk about box sets. I dont even have one, nor know that much about them. Quote

I just found it incredibly uneven... Some very complex yet melodic pieces and then some "free-jazz" pieces that IMHO is just a lot of disconnected blowing.... Quote

Brad, it's obvious that you're not into classic jazz guitar. Are you into the Farlow set at all? Wes Montgomery? Kenny Burrell? Barney Kessel? Herb Ellis? Anyone else? Quote
